...a live instrumental- single guitar heavy with overdrive playing an arabian melody, (sort of like the intro to assassins of allah) with the band joining in at the climax. long-ish: somewhere between the five and eight minute mark.

someone gave me a hawkwind compilation that they'd knocked up circa 1990. this song was on the end. the rest of the stuff was studio material so i'm not even 100% sure this particular one is hawkwind. i can't find any reference to it anywhere and it's been slowly driving me mad for years. it's like an itch i can't scratch. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know.... Could it possibly be "Death Warmed Up" by High Tide, a band which are often compared to Hawkwind (in fact, violinist Simon House joined the latter)? However, you didn't mention the presence of a violin, so it may be I'm wrong.
