Following the success of the 10 PROGROCK COMMMANDMENTS thread, I decided to create this one. However, I didn't invent those commandments. Mr. Fripp did. Here they are :

1-Any existing solution to a problem is the wrong one : absolutum, obsoletum
2-If you have an idea, don't play it!
3-When a change in music needs emphasis, don't play it ; the change in the music is emphasis enough.
4-Don't phrase with any other members of the band unless it's in the part.
5-Phrasing in the part should include no more than 2 people.
6-If the tension in the music needs emphasisizing, don't ; The tension is there because of what you are playing, not what you're about to play.
7-If you add to change your part to build tension, don't add - leave out.
8-The maximum tension you can add is by stopping completely.
9-If there is space for a fill, which is demanded by the music, don't play it ; there are other people who would like to use the opportunity.
10-If the part you're playing is boring, stop listening with your head.
11-If this still bores you, listen to the interaction between all the parts.
12-If this still bores you, stop playing and wait until you are no longer bored.
13-Do not be dramatic.
14-Do not be afraid to repeat yourself.
15-Do not be afraid to take your time.

Shorter list:

1-Repeat yourself
2-Take your time
3-Leave room
4-Listen to everyone else
5-Develop a new set of cliches
6-Develop a new vocabulary of drum sounds
7-Listen to the sound of what you play

That's it! So what do you proggers think about that? I think it's funny and true in some cases.

Fripp never fails to amaze me.

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Yep Smile

I think it was actually kind of a joke but it really comes from him.

Interesting find. Those are definitely some good rules for drummers of any genre of music. Thumbs Up

Well I agree with some of it, but not all of it. I disagree with the first two. It never hurts to try something new as long as you don't try it the moment of performance. I'm a drummer so I speak from a little experience.

Fripp is such a mofo. If he says something I'm almost sure it will be bollocks.

Maybe but these are interesting because it can help to understand how the crims made up their music and it can explain a lot of their originality and their unique style.

Anyway, some of these rules are a bit of a joke anyway Wink

Actually, this was just one other of those fallouts he had with mister Bruford. Brufordness wasn't invited to the THRAK era KC until Belew and Levin lobbied him into it. :D
Epic.
