I would suggest Space Oddity and The Man Who Sold The World as good starting points.

Myself I think Space Oddity one of the more uneven. The Man... very good.
My favorites are Low (really love the whole Berlin trilogy), Hunky Dory and Scary Monsters. I made a Bowie poll yesterday. Could be quite helpful to you. |

I'm a huge Bowie fan and have most of his albums. He's had an interesting career in that all of his good albums seem to be one after the other until the mid 80s, where he got increasingly patchy.
As for a career summation, go for 'The Singles Collection' which has many of his best songs on 2cds.
After that, get:
Ziggy Stardust
Hunky Dory
Low
Heroes
Diamond Dogs
Station To Station
Scary Monsters
Aladdin Sane
If you like those,
Lodger
Man Who Sold The World
Heathen
Hours
His others are a bit of a muchness, imo. The only two truly bad ones are 'Tonight' and 'Never Let Me Down', and the Tin Machine affair was a bit ill advised, but really his best work dates from 1970-1980 and little beyond that bar the odd track ('Absolute Beginners', 'Loving The Alien', 'Cat People' etc.)

Try HUNKY DORY or THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD as they're both quite progressive.

And the Berlin Trilogy of course, basically pure prog. Ziggy stardust is a pure classic, can't forget that one.

I have 46 Bowie albums, how do I recommend one?
There are so many different styles!
So;
Hunky Dory
Ziggy Stardust
Alladin Sane
Diamond Dogs
Station to Station
Would be my top 5 (I think)!

I own the CD Live At Santa Monica Live 1972, that's a great live compilation of his splendid work in the early Seventies. The soundtrack from the movie Christiane F. is also worth featuring tracks like Heroes (with Fripp on guitar), Sens Of Doubt (wonderful Chamberlin, the early Mellotron), Station To Station and Warszawa!

I own all the previously listed albums with the exception of Hours, and
like 'em all, but am surprised that nobody mentions Outside or
Earthling, both excellent imo, and among my favorites.
el bothy, Based on your Fripp sig pic, I'd say make Scary Monsters your first purchase without hesitation. |

So much music. So little time.
