Topic: King of Irish Guitar Posted: August 14 2006 at 14:57 |
Who is the king of Irish guitarists?
I voted tie. I think Gallager wins slightly in the song writing department, whereas Moore is
better technically.

I love the Phil Lynott tribute DVD by Gary Moore & Friends but my vote goes to the powerful, dynamic and emotional late Rory Gallagher with his bashed Fender Stratocaster, what a killer-guitarist, also on the acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin and Dobro

No one compares to Gary Moore.
He is the best rock guitarist ever.

I have to admit to not being very familiar with Rory Gallagher's work (although of course I know of him), but everybody by now should know that Gary Moore for me ranks only beneath Blackmore as a guitarist. So, of course, I voted for him. BTW, Tony:

Gallagher for me. Until 75, the man was a real superb classy guitarist >> then he got much rockier (and less good).
Moore >> never heard Skid Row , then I was not a fan of Lizzy , I liked him in Colosseum II , but was not a fan of his in his 80's metal days , so I forgot about him and since he is the Bluesman, he's OK
Did he ever put out any records in the late 70's that would take upon his Colosseum II works?

Gary Moore plays on all three of Cozy Powell's solo albums, which are not as jazzy as Colosseum II's works, but still not metal by any means. On the second, called "Tilt", there is a superb guitar track called "Sunset" that ranks among my all-time favourites, often dedicated by Gary to the memory of Randy Rhoads.

Check Out Stud - the Taste spin-off band; Jim Gregan took over Gallagher's guitar duties, and didn't he end up in Thin Lizzy? And how lead guitarists did they have pass through their ranks. BTW Christy Moore plays a mean acoustic guitar. And indeed, Edge has been innovative in his guitarwork.
Said recently elsewhere on the site, 34 Hours is the Skid Row album to hear and marvel at Gary Moore's playing whilst still in his teens (should be available through Sony Columbia). BTW whilst talking Gary Moore in jazz rock mode, I think you'll find him on at least one of former Isotope guitarist Gary Boyle's early solo albums - I think The Dancer and if not that Electric Glide.

Page is a legend and the father of heavy rock.He wrote the book but I just favour Gary Moore.
Gary also appeared on ALW's Variations album which is on the archives.

Interesting to read in recent edition of Jazzwise, John
McLaughlin claiming to have given Jimmy Page lessons when they were
fellow session musicians in London in the mid-60's.
