Topic: Feedback in prog? Posted: December 27 2004 at 09:40 |
Well, after listening for about ten times in the last 3 days to Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation, I came up withg a hard question: does any prog band use guitar feedback in their songs? Do answer!

I'm fairly certain there must be, Fripp certainly experimented a lot
with feedback, although not in a prog context. I'm sure if you delve
through enough RIO or prog metal you'll find an example but I can't off
the top of my head.

What kind of feedback do you mean? If you're talking strictly about delay feedback (which I'm sure you're not) then every artist who uses delay (about every frickin prog artist, lol) uses feedback. I personally do all the time - you just set the amount of times you want it to delay, basically.
But just standard reverb creates feedback, so again, any artists who use reverb are creating a feedback loop in a way. Or basically reverb uses feedback just like delay does. Fripp definately uses it, you can hear it in the one theme at the end of Moonchild.
I'll ask Maani if I can upload some stuff to the site, maybe teach a little about the sounds of prog. It would actually be really cool if this site got away with more hard core website aspects because I KNOW there are other prog musicians on this site who would love to share their sounds and their teachings about prog. I sure would!

Daydream Nation is a great album. Are Sonic Youth prog? One of my favorite feedback albums is Ted Nugent's Double Live Gonzo. I hope there weren't too many gasps of disgust as that last sentence was read. When it comes to using feedback, Nugent is a master. Frank Zappa must be prog because he's listed in this site's discography. He used feedback quite often. Check out the Shut Up albums for good examples.
Can somebody explain in more detail the kinds of feedback? Sometimes you get feedback through your pickups without any vibration from the strings. Sometimes you get it from the strings. Are there terms for these two different types?

Well, ever listened to Nirvana's Radio Friendly Unit Shifter? When I say feedback I also think about my cousin's way of just propping the guitar next to the amp, thus creating massive distortion through the overriding of the highest frequency the guitar generates, because of the magnetic fields . I simply try to play with the chords by pulling them above to the bridge, even though I don't actually play guitar .

The best song for feedback IMO:
1.The Live version of BYTOR&THE SNOW DOG.
A feedback tour-de-force!
