It has to be Welcome Back My Friends by ELP.

However for all those people who think Yessongs is a brilliant "Live" album read this

Please explain yourself ! it is very easy to attack without arguments !

King Crimson's best live period was 1969-1975. Circus, Earthbond, Live in Amsterdam, Night watch are some of the albums from this period. The second Crimson period after 1975 is IMO much less inventive and not so exciting.

Queen is one of the bands that don't deserve to be called prog at all.

Pat Metheny is boring for me. There is a lot of more exciting jazz/rock bands (Mahavishnu orchestra, Weather report, Passport, Pierre Morlein Gong, Soft machine, National health, Jeff Beck, Billy Cobham...and many more)

Saga is also not very representative live band.

That's only my oppinion. If you like them that's OK.

You probably didn't listen to KC's 'B'Boom' live : it is as exciting as their earlier live performances, moreover it features two line-ups, so it's twice more exciting ! It has some interesting live improvisation moments as well.

Queen's live at the rainbow released around 1974 is a stunning performance with lots of tracks from their prog album : Queen II.

Loose change is a jazz-fusion band in the vein of Steve Morse's early solo career, it nevertheless features a cover of Morse's "cruise missile". it has Virgil donati on drums.

I don't consider Pat Metheny as boring : his music can be one time smooth and another time experimental, plus he blends perfectly brazilian music with jazz. I think "last train home" is a true masterpiece with the delicate sound of sitar and the drums played to sound like a train in movement.

Saga's 'In transit' is the best live performance they ever recorded, and I don't see anything wrong in it.

You didn't give your feelings about the 5 other records mentioned !!! So what's wrong with my list, if you haven't listened to more than half of it.

My favourite live albums (in no real order):

On the Road - Traffic

Pulse - Pink Floyd

Pictures at an Exhibition - Elp

Genesis - Live

I know it's not prog but I'll mention that my all time favourite live album is The Concert for Bangladesh. Almost a half an hour of Dylan material and a bunch of George Harrison preformances. What could be better?

I love Dram Theater's "Live Scenes From New York", that would be my choise... an incredibly strong live performance through three hours of length... The only better live album I know is Iced Earth's "Alive In Athens", but that's straight Metal.

Please note that I'm a total newbie in Progressive Music, before bashing my posts... recommendations and teachings in general are welcome :)

I agree with you on Harrison. I have "Concert for Bangladesh" DVD. One of the best non prog DVDs in my collection.

It's one of rare concerts where you can smell fantastic atmosphere, and the time when people stand for other people.

With John McLaughlin (Love devotion surrender with Carlos Santana) Harrison was one of rare who believed in god, love and kindness.

10. Genesis - Seconds Out
      A great set. I always felt that Collins was a better live vocalist than Gabriel.

09. Pink Floyd - Is There Anybody Out There?
      The Wall in it's entirety. Great sound and good energy. Mother and Run Like Hell are performed especially strong here.

08. KISS - Alive!
      I know it's not prog, but it's a great album. This album shows how a good live performance can breathe life into some only average songs. The only KISS album to own.

07. The Residents - Live At The Fillmore
      Trippy, strange and totally out there.

06. John Cale - Sabotage Live
      Truly an overlooked gem. It's at moments savagely punk and at others beautifully serene.

05. Tangerine Dream - Poland
      I never get tired of listening to this. Sequencers gone wild.

04. They Might Be Giants - Severe Tire Damage
      Again, not prog, but one of the most fun live recordings.

03. King Crimson - Absent Lovers
      Incredible sound, excellent performance. I love this version of the band, so I may be biased.

02. 801 - Live (Damn, I hoped to be the first to mention this one.)
      If you haven't heard this, do yourself a favor and get it.

01. Cheap Trick - At Budokan
      Hands down what a live album should be. Raw, exciting and quick.

Very strange collection here

1. Gabriel is light years better than Collins as a composer and singer and has great personality on stage

2. Wall concert is the worst (booooring!) PF concert ever

I think we have just opposite taste for music
