I never was a Volta fan but the last album (Which can be listened in the Mars Volta's myspace page) sounds quite listenable and catchy most of the time. 3.5 star album.

One of my favourite songs in the album is Asilos Magdalena with the satanic lyrics combined by elegant acoustic guitar. However, once the "Estrella de la mañana" vocal gets the distortion, some out of place guitar dominates and it just sounds completely horrible!Dead Seriously, it sounds like an amateur guitar player in a Guitar Center trying to solo without thinking what notes come out. To add insult to the injury, the guitar tone has to be the most unpleasant tone I've heard in a studio album. The worst part has to be that double guitar near the end of the solo.

What are your opinions?

Totally disagree. I think the progression from beauty to discord complements the lyrics. Raises my hackles, which I think was exactly the intention.

I'm guessing you're not a fan of King Crimson either, then?

I don't remember feeling any particular irritation with that solo.

That's strange, I guess it's just me and my dad who don't understand the solo.

PS: I'm not a big fan of King Crimson, but they have some brilliant songs here and there.

I listened to the song a couple of hours ago and still have it in fresh memory, and I don't find it the worst solo ever. I guess one has to have a taste for dissonance to appreciate it.
