Topic: mp3s on PA Posted: October 07 2006 at 15:33 |
Many a times I read excellent reviews on this site for bands that are not well known. These peak my interest greatly but most frequently PA does not seem to include Streaming mp3 for such groups. Is this due to legal issues? What is the process to submit an mp3 of a newly reviewed CD? |

Thanks for your response TonyR. The PA claims over 12 thousand titles. Having 1000 tracks availale is less then 10% coverage. In other words 90% of the tiles are not covered. This figure is probably much worse since bands like Genesis, Yes ect. have multiple mp3s available. Anyway this is not a critism. I am wadering if it would make sense to add a box under the review submission form which asks the reviewer if he/she could submit a track from the album they just reviewed and describes the methodology to submit such an mp3s. Thanks for your consideration.

The problem is a good 50% of these bands I would say are relatively obscure. On their website, they might have a few 30-seconds samples avaliable, but PA accepts almost exclusively full songs. If a no one has an album by a band and the aforementioned condition applies, there's not really much we can do.

The idea is to have an Mp3 for each band, not each album.

I very much appreciate your responses. But I still did not get an answer to my earlier question. Would it be possible to ask the reviewers to submit - whenever possible - an mp3 of a song from the album they reviewed. Would this create a storage space problem? Anyway, thanks for your consideration of this suggestion.

I'm curious, does Progarchives have to pay the record companies for the mp3's and are there some kind of limitations on how many mp3's we can have here?

It is difficult to answer that question...let's just say that we dont get many complaints from the bands themselves. We hope that there is a mutual benefit from having these full samples available on the Streaming Player. In response to spleenache in a perfect world this would be a good way of acquiring MP3s but many people would not be comfortable with this. |
