Topic: Tull remasters Posted: January 12 2005 at 02:52 |
Hi all. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about any up and coming Jethro Tull remasters? I know that everything from This Was to Stormwatch (with maybe the odd exception such as Living in the Past, but I'm not sure) has been remastered with bonus tracks, but does anyone know if The Broadsword and the Beast or Crest of a Knave are going to be remastered?

'A' has also been remastered, with the 'Slipstream' video as a bonus CD. I read somewhere that Broadsword in in preparation, but that it's not going to be a double CD. As many fans know, the Broadsword sessions were very proliphic, and many of the songs have appeared in the 20Years boxed set or the Nightcap CD.

It's the album after 'Stormwatch' and before 'Broadsword and the Beast'. It was going to be a Ian Anderson solo album, but it ended being credited to Tull. That explains the 'A' for 'Anderson'.

1980s Tull albums should be approached with caution - Ian Anderson was still writing a lot of good songs, but 80s production values didn't do them many favours, particularly on large chunks of A, Under Wraps and Crest of a Knave. They were still blinding on stage though.

I've just heard a couple of songs from Broadsword & The Beast which I found to be quite nice. I've also heard from many that the song Budapest is a good'un. Having said that, 80s Tull doesn't compare with 70s Tull, which is absolutely fantastic!!!

A sounds fine! It's Broadsword that blows, productionwise. It's so FLAT. I'll pick up the remaster to hear what kind of improvements have been made, even though I like about all of 2 songs on that album.

I just got it yesterday (got a lot of stuff yesterday, woohoo!). I enjoyed it a lot, although I thought the sound was a little harsh, vocally speaking. Also, the keyboards were very hard to hear sometimes. The bass is very weird and distorted, too, but I kind of dug it, even though Glenn Cornick (I think it was him, the CD isn't in front of me at the moment) seemed to be having an off night. His solo on "Bouree" is very muddled. All in all, it wasn't a perfect show but it was an exciting one. I missed hearing Anderson's stage remarks about the sound check, though. I thought they added a nice bit of tension in the Isle Of Wight movie. And I thought it was a little presumptuous of Anderson to assert in the liner notes that, if Jimi Hendrix were alive today they'd be pals.

The good thing with JT remasters is that not only the sound is better but the bonus tracks are as good as the material released on the original albums they are featured on.
