It would be great if they released something akin to their 80's material. The trouble with that I think, is that they don't know what metal sounds like these days. Back when they were young, they listened to and were influenced by all sorts of underground bands, like Diamond Head, Budgie, Killing Joke. And some big ones of course, but they really listened to a lot of good stuff. The past few years, ever since the late 90's, I see them namedrop a lot of popular bands, from Korn to Trivium, and if that is where they get their influences from, how can they ever sound like they did back in the 80's? I'm not sure they've ever heard bands like Nevermore, Dark Tranquillity, Persuader, etc etc that is bringing metal forth. Instead they've been influenced by these seemingly metal bands like Trivium and all those other "metalcore" bands. I think the closest they've been to metal in recent years is their short tour with In Flames. And In Flames isn't exactly the purest metal out there. That said, I wouldn't mind if Metallica simply release a hard rock album, but it seems like metal is the only genre they were ever good at, and now they've been away from it so long that they can't find the way back. Case in point: St. Anger.

I'm sorry if I throw a lot of ideas out in this thread, but Metallica-related threads usually interest me. :)

Well, we all agree that their peak was Master Of Puppets but I actually loved The Black Album, and Load was also good , I didn't care if they played a softer style because the songs were fine. St Anger was really crappy, though. If they go back to the Balak Album style it will be fine for me. If they release an epic album in the vein of Master it would be even better. But please no more St. Anger-like stuff.

For me too. Cretainly, they're one of my favorites bands. Big smile
And do you really think they can go Metalcore or stuff like that? I believe they don't even listen to the modern metal bands and maybe don't know what Black, Doom and Death Metal is.
BUT it's true that St. Anger is maybe a bit more modern than the other albums, but I think it's because they wanted to create an unique sound, with unique production (which is realatively bad, IMO).

I would prefer it if Metallica was inspired by bands like Opeth and went down the road of a more intricate album in the vein of Justice and not so much a Master wannabe.

I have high hopes but I feel they may be misguided.

I really enjoy Metallica, and although i prefer the first 4 albums i like both sides of them.

Even St. Anger, it's a great record, BUT it's just not good enough to be Metallica!
if an other band released it everyone would have loved it!

nou... mag ik het niet nog een keertje overdoen?

Clever words!! Can't agree more!! Clap
For the St. Anger haters, maybe theur cause is that album may be too modern to be Metallica, but who cares? That disc has some damn good rocking moments despite it's not amongst my favorite albums of the band.

i've heard the "new song" and it sounds like mixture of Load and St.Anger and i don't like it (though i like load and anger occasionally). I' have no big expectations, I think it's gonna suck in a way or another (but still think it is quite good still)
What I really hope is that they find themselves reborn. Master and justice - or some new sound, and maybe more progressive.. I really hope so but there's maybe 7% change fot that

"St Anger" i feel was a step in the wrong direction for Metallica, they are capable of so much more, Master, Justice and the Black album showed that - i wish they'd kept it like those, they're brilliant  Cry

I would prefer that Metallica re-discover their 80s' epic thrash metal feel. Ride the Lightning was their masterpiece for me, along with Master of Puppets.

I consider St Anger not too bad...

expecting a back-to-the-roots album would be at least naive... and to be honest i would be very disappointed if they were trying to release a Master Of Puppets II i would be very disappointed.. their classics belong to the past...

Load was awesome!!! real 70's Sabbath/Zeppelin sound...
Reload was what was left out of Load and is so mediocre..

St. Anger was lame but helped Hetfield "recover" so i accept its significant role...

anyway, Metallica remain the best band and can't wait for their new album...
