By the way, if the bands/musicians use a singer in an album, more than 30% of lead vocalists are female in my collection of 2006 purchases. I don't think they are rare ....

Barbara Gaskin from Spirogyra (you can also hear her voice in Hatfield and the North). But in Spirogyra she really shines, in my opinion. And the voice seems quite normal, by the way...
My favourite female singer...

Dagmar Krause. She tops every female singer I've ever heard. Specially good in Henry Cow's "In praise of learning"; in every Art Bears album, and project from that point on.

Dagmar Krause was a member of the band "The City Preachers" in the beginning, which had a 2nd great female vocalist: Inga Rumpf. she later became singer of the bands Frumpy and Atlantis. at least Frumpy should be in "Prog Related". Atlantis hardly has any prog relations. I highly recommend the live albums of Frumpy and Atlantis

![]() ![]() ![]() *desperately looks for emoticon of someone wielding a machine gun* BTW, Apoteosi are from Calabria, where my father was originally from... nice land of wonderful, knife-happy people! ![]() ![]() ![]() *composes herself, remembering her Admin role* I love low-pitched female voices, having one myself... though not as powerful as I would like. However, there are some notable exceptions... Two great vocalists that come to my mind are Pentangle's Jacqui McShee and Fairport Convention's Sandy Denny (both are in PA's database) - though my own personal favorite is, of course, Kate Bush. |

A couple more Canterbury ladies: Barbara Gaskin (worked with Dave Stewart) and Carol Grimes (Delivery) . Surprised no mention of both the original and the better known Renaissance ladies.
Judy Dybell (sp? the original Fairport Singer), and did what are effectively demos fof some tunes that appeared on the first King Crimson album - found on the Brondesbury Tapes (Giles, Giles & Fripp). Annette Peacock, Sidsel Endresen voices of jazz rock fusion (cf. the likes of Sarah Pillow, sometime collaborator with Percy Jones' Tunnels, is most definitely opera trained). If you want to include Grace Slick, then it's also worth reminding of Pat Benatar... Also in the area of RIO/Canterbury check Elaine De Falco (Hughscore) and Amy Denio (Tommy Tipton's Memorial, EC Nudes/ Fred Frith). Sonia Nedelec of Minimum Vital |

I don't know if she could be considered a prog artist. She was indeed mentioned on this site but note that the first 2 RTF albums, though being progressive in essence, were not prog as in jazz-rock/fusion. She indeed happened to have a very warm vibratoless 6-octave range voice. By now I have 3 of her solo albums which I happen to enjoy very much now, and they constitute a 50% of my listening time.
