Recently I bought (despite the p2p ) these two new outputs from these well-known prog metal band.
I've been listening to Therion's new release many many times, and I believe it is really a masterpiece of music.
On the contrary, Scarsick was, in the beginning,. a huge disappointment, but maybe later it will grow in me (maybe ).
Speaking personally, it's so strange how a band you own the whole discography let you down so much (PoS) with his last album, while a semi-unknown band (for me - apart their big shots), literally left me "without words" (Therion).
I don't know if there are many Therion and Pos fan at the same time around here, and I understand they are very different, but they're both prog metal. So which one do you prefer?

Would you please make some comments on both albums? Edited by CrazyDiamond - February 03 2007 at 10:17 |

Oh well, when PoS is being compared to Therion, this can either mean an extreme rise of Therion or extreme decline of PoS. I heard both albums and did not like either of them, however I must admit that Therion was slightly more enjoyble listen.

Hope that this poll would have more participants.
At least, Gothic Kabbalah is winning.

I must take back my initial impression. The more I listen to Scarsick the less disgusting it sounds to me, and it's quite to the contrary with Therion. Scarsick, although being far from PoS best efforts, is definitely interesting and very unusual album, which can grow on you, while Gothic Kabbalah becomes more and more boring with each listening.

Although I still consider Scarsick the least impressive release of Pain of Salvation by a large margin., after a while I have to say that it's not bad at al, apart from some embarassing moments.
I have not heard Gothic Kabbalah, but Therion belongs to the bunch of bands which I usually try to avoid.

^ Gothic Kabbalah is very different from the other Therion albums ... it's the only Therion album that I actually like. It's definitely worth a listen!

I do own 5 Therion albums.... I just wrote a review of Gothic Kabbalah singing praises for it (well, 4 stars, the second disc is not as good as the first one).... but I also happen to love THELI, DEGGIAL, and to a much lesser extent, LEMURIA, and definitely not love, SIRIUS B.... in the case of the present comparison, let me first say this: if we put POS's best (Remedy Lane for me) against Therion's best (Deggial or Theli), then definitely the battle would be won by Gildenlow's band... it's on another level, not only musically but conceptually (?!)..... By the way, Therion's lyrics are not really something you'll remeber till you die (an encyclopedia of paganism, that's it)... But Gothic Kabbalah against the "Daniel hates everybody and their dog" album, it's also a no contest, but this time with Therion smashing Scarsick. For those who haven't heard it, try Gothic Kabbalah, it's like a "therion-meets-Ayreon" experiment.. very good.

Sorry, but Theli is a mediocre album in my humble opinion. Musicianship, songwriting and production leave much to be desired. The worst problem is that most of the metal riffs, solo themes and classical elements are particularly bland and cheesy - even for a symphonic metal band. I know that these remarks will offend quite a few people, but it is one of the few albums that I hate "with a passion". |
