Topic: Grateful Dead Posted: March 26 2007 at 19:11 |
I'll start this by saying that I'm not a fan of The Grateful Dead. But I did live with a "Dead Head" while I was in college. My surprise was to find no mention of them here. I was just curious if Prog Archives even considers them "Prog". I would have assumed that they would be here somewhere. I only post this as to gain a reference point from some of the guys here and mean no disrespect to dead heads or to people who don't like them at all.

There was a similar thread to this a month or so ago.
The general feeling is no. Not prog or even related.
I don't agree however, and feel The Dead should be at least prog related. Contemporaires of theirs, such as the Doors and Airplane are here, so...
Roll on.

They have some proggy moments (Aoxomoxoa, IMO), but they're not prog at all, really. Just amazing pschedelic, sometimes folky, always jamming rock.

^ I agree basically but have you heard Terrapin, Wake of the Flood, Blues For Allah, Mars Hotel, Steal Your Face(live) ? Their proper studio albums were far from a 'jam band' and were surprisingly progressive.

They might have some prog traits, but there are bands that show lot more prog tendencies and are not (yet?) in PA ,namely Bloodrock,Sugarloaf and Golden Earring.

I state the previously agreed statement - Psychedelic, rootsy, jammy, but not prog. The example by which "cult" & "indie" bands can build a solid career based on a solid "core" of fans, rather than chart success. Hello, most prog groups of today who don't find themselves being buzz bands, here is your inspiration. Them & Gazpacho. Heck, even Bob Lefsetz mentions their mad method.

I think the Dead's studio albums are way better than their live sloppy jams.

AOXOMOXOA, really nice album.....'St. Stephen', 'Mountains Of The Moon' , and 'What's Became Of The Baby' are my fav songs from that one. well, i think thats amazing, also progressive music from that time, and from West Coast; its not a prog-rock genre represented by the bands as ELP, KG, Yes, etc., of course.

On this board in the past, I've championed the Dead's inclusion but have continuously been denied.....The Dead are folk! They're just a jam band! Dinosours of classic rocka! Naaaaah, they're progressive rock by definition and their exclusion is a blight on this site. Phish? The Airplane and Doors? And now people want sludge rockers like Bloodrock included?
But, I'm sure PA will come around....who can resist the good ol' Grateful Dead.

Are you serious? No offence or anything, but i didn't think that anyone
anywhere ever could be able to even stand "What's become of the baby?",
possibly my least favourite song in the whole world. Mariah Carey
included... all in all, i tend to think that Aoxomoxoa is a small
disaster of an album, but maybe that's just me.. : )
