Their second effort Fly to the rainbow contains various interesting songs, notably the title track and Drifting Sun. Also Taken by force showcases some interesting number, especially The Sails of Charon, Riot of your time and most of all Born to touch your feelings Regarding the "Jabs-era" instead, Lovedrive, Animal Magnetism and Love at first sting are very good outputs! The former, especially, contains two of my all-times Scorpions favourites, Is there anybody there and Coast to coast

| i'm amazed you didn't mention We'll Burn The Sky (in my top5 rock songs ever) cause it seems you know a lot about Scorpions...

I'd say that Lovedrive is my favorite Scorpions album if I had to pick only one ... recorded immediately after the departure of Roth his influence is still there, but there are also hints of their more metal style which followed on Animal Magnetism. So this album connects both eras.

The song "Animal Magnetism" is my all-time favorite Scorps tune. I love the space rock feel of it. I think it is unlike any of their other songs. The overlay of the triplet feel guitar work atop the slow 4/4 tempo is hypnotic.
Do you feel this is a direct result of the new member or a carryover?

Not withholding the Schenker link,Scorpions and U.F.O. were very similar in the late 70s early 80s. Admittedly, UFO had learned their 'chops' in Germany during the early 70s. UFO I & II also sound similar to Lonesome Crow. Even down to the sleeves.Phew! I nearly called it artwork.

What? That was when the rot set in.....
Their last good album was Lovedrive and their live album Tokyo Tapes is the only "best of" you should consider.
Trickster why are you going watching them?? They are dreadful now... | Couldn't have put it better myself, oh northern one - 'Tokyo Tapes' (depite it's less than wonderful production values) is one of the most overlooked live albums on the 1970's - in my opinion, the primary driving force from this period was this man: When he left, they turned into just another heavy metal band...

I "borrowed" and listened to a bunch of Scorpions albums yesterday and today and came to the conclusion that I liked the first album the most(it is almost based entirely around instrumentation - nice!), as well as "In Trance" the most, followed by the "Blackout" era and then the stuff between those albums. I think most hits are from the 80's though.

I am seeing this band live pretty soon, and although I am familiar with their most popular songs more than just well, are there any specific essential hard rock albums they released? |
I don't believe they would play anything from before Lovedrive. But from there to Love at Frist Sting is their "classic" period. They did still manage some great songs on their albums afterwards, and for sure they'll likely play "wind of Change".

I think that the current Scorpions set will include many hits from their early 80s phase. I saw them once in the late 1990s (after they released Crazy World), and most of the songs they played were from Animal Magnetism, Love at First Sting, Blackout and Savage Amusement (+ the inevitable Wind of Change of course).

The set list on the next tour could be interesting, as Uli Jon Roth is re-joining for the tour; considering the various paths he's followed in the last 20 or so years, it will be interesting to see which direction they take...

One awesome band, progressive or not, though they did touch the subject a bit with their "Moment of Glory" album, many songs of which are a fusion of hard guitar and classical for those of you who haven't checked it out. Schenker was no musically ignorant pop-guitarist like many of his time, but the band nontheless had to make it big with more commercial music throughout their careers. I unfortunately have not seen them live in concert yet, so I can't judge whether they would be worth the money, but I would suspect so.

I was always a big fan of the live album 'World Wide Live'. I saw them a few years ago touring with Whitesnake (shudder). I went with friends and I'd have to say it was one of the most fun concerts I've been to. You'll have a good time I'm sure.
Moment of Glory is another favorite. If you haven't heard it, you should.

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson
