Went with Bruford, especially his first two solo efforts.  With powerhouses like Holdsworth and Berlin to back you up, you can't go wrong!  The albums show how much of an all-around percussionist Bruford is as well (tonal, not just drums and non-tonal, percussion instruments:  marimba, etc.)  Excellent and classic works...

^ the 'Bruford Tapes' is outstanding also.. radio broadcast sound but well worth it. John Clark does a great job filling in for Allan.

Works by Chick Corea, Victor Wooten and Dennis Chambers are the ones I dig.

I love the M.O. albums: in my opinion this band anticipated many others of the same genre.

A hard choice as I like so many there; The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Weather Report, Brand X, Soft machine, BB Earthworks but I'll go with Bruford.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
