Some excellent choices on here. I'd like to add 'Plaid' to the collection. I can reccomend the albums 'Not for Threes' and 'Rest proof Clockwork' Here's a taster:

Plaid - Eyen

There's alot of electronica I like, mostly from the 90's. I can reccomend Global Communication, their album '76:14' is brilliant. Also for lovers of really dark and 'challenging' ambient music try Pete Namlook.

Ooohh Plaid is great and Global Communication... 76:14 is such a beautiful album... so minimalistic and dark, it's like being pulled deep into a world you didn't know existed... fantastic album...

For really good Ambient/Drone, we need not look further than prog's beloved Steven Wilson, and his project BASS COMMUNION.

I think there's definitely a reason to look further than Bass Communion. So much good stuff out there...

The ultimate album I've heard that fits this description in Steve Roach's Darkest Before Dawn.  A single piece clocking in at over an hour that will take you to the darkest depths of space. Thumbs%20Up
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
