Definately Cash. The video is genius, I like his tempo more, the arrangement of the chorus seems "fuller," and it seems so much more appropriate for an aging Cash to sing it instead of Trent. But then, I heard the Cash version first so I may be biased. :P

I saw it at camp one year, and felt the same way. A very emotional song.

I have to buck the trend here and go for Reznor's version of the tune. When The Downward Spiral came out I was going through a rough time in my life and I really identified with that song.Cash's version does nothing for me.

I've heard of Mr. Cash's version first so I think that changes my perspective.
The fact that he's not with us anymore also gives the lyrics more pain than the original. My vote goes to Johnny Cash's version. |

I think the original version was much better. Sure Cash's cover was nice, but I felt the original was more interesting and effective. Reznor's voice has a lot of pain in it and I felt the arrangement worked better. So yes, the original over Cash.

Even Trent Reznor admits that Johnny Cash is the definative version, he even does it as a cover of Cash's cover of his own song now.
Without the video Cash is verson is awesome - with the video it is also deeply moving - the emphasis and meaning shifts dramatically from a song about drugs to a song about loss. Tear to my eyes.

Pretty much every cover Johnny Cash did was better than the original.

Original: http://youtube.com/watch?v=tgSWRicWIy4
Cash's version: http://youtube.com/watch?v=AO9dbmJ_2zU Well? I like the original more but Cash did a great job on it as well. The original just grabs me more for some reason, I like Trent's voice a little better too. I also don't like how Cash changed sh*t to thorns. |
