Vinnie Moore is a kinda 2nd-rate Satriani... come to think of it,
Moore is nowhere near as inventive. Tony McAlpine should appear on any
list of "Gods" in this category, but they all share the same failing,
with the exception of Vai; They can all play mind-scramblingly fast
licks - and tend to, even where fast licks aren't appropriate. They're
virtuosos for the sake of virtuosity, generally - although "Surfing
With the Alien" has some great moments (title track, Satch's Boogie).
In his own right, Satriani is a guitar god. In the context of prog,
he's alright - nothing truly boundary pushing except in
playing technique, but all these guitarists (with the exception of
Vai  ) quickly become mind-numbingly boring and cliched, as they over-use the techniques. |
I actually think Stach is the most listenable of all the "guitar
virtuosos", he's certainly less of a show off than Vai, IMO. Plus I
think he's a much better writer of melodies.

I think that he really qualifies for the title "guitar god" ... but while he is a true virtuoso, many of his songs can truly be called "boring". Especially his newest album is not the best introduction.

SATCH IS A GUITAR GOD! He is up their with Vai, Petrucci an Yngwie as possibly the best four guitarists around at the mo. Possibly the best four virtuoso guitarists around at the mo!

Satriani is great. I think he's the most listenable of the guitar virtuosos, like Forgotten Son said... Strange Beautiful Music is the first guitar virtuoso album I ever bought, but Surfing with the Alien is the best, at least from what I've heard so far. I agree that he does get boring sometimes, and I prefer Yngwie, MacAlpine, Vai, etc. over him, but he's still cool. I'm hoping to see him live next month, and if I have a good time then maybe I'll pick up his new album...

He is worthy of being deemed a "guitar god," sure, but when you get past his ability and past innovation, his songs and albums aren't very consistent, nor are they really musical masterpieces (maybe with a few exceptions). Most of his material is very straightforward, and that gets tiring for me. I'll give him "cool rock grooves."

I meant that out of the guitar virtuosos... more specifically out of hard rock/metal... I think Satriani is the most accessible or beginer friendly for people just getting into that kind of music because his style is not as extreme as guys like Vai and Yngwie but more catchy than guys like MacAlpine (does that make more sense?). 5 Favorite shred albums in terms of shred: Yngwie J. Nice list! On my website I used to have "Metal Shred" as a category - I just added "Shred" as a rock category. I will add a page which lists albums from those two genres ... So we can determine the best shred album.

I like The Extremist ... not his best, but very good. I just prefer his more experimental albums (although they're still much less experimental than most Vai albums).
