After listening heavily to the big 10 prog bands from the 70s for over 10 years I still maintain that Tull and Gentle Giant are better 70s bands than Yes and Genesis. I also find it a bit of an insult when people rate Pink Floyd as high as these 4 bands too. Although I really like Floyd, but their musical and song writing talents are not in the same league. I also rate camel highly too Wink

Big 10, 7 watever is a popularity contest and has nothing to do with skill. My 70's big 10 would not be all english bands, infact it would probably have one or two only.Wink

Apples and oranges my friend. Apples and oranges. Insulted? I do not understand.

Just as long as King Crimson, Yes, Gentle Giant and Genesis are in the top 5, I'm with you. ;)

I put Gentle Giant as the same league as Yes, Genesis, Crimson ,and Floyd , but I consider Tull a little subpar .

Crimson and Floyd wouldn't even make my top 10 bands of the 70s. Crimson were non existent in the studio from 1975-1979. While Red and Larks are worthy 4 stars albums, I don't find either to be first class 5 star prog. Poseidon is a 5 star and Lizard is a 4 star while Islands, Starless and In the court are lucky to reach 3 and a half stars. Dark side of the moon would have to be the most overhyped album of all time. Apart from the first 3 songs there isn't much else to get excited over. Wish you were here is similar. The title song and Have a cigar are fairly mediocre to my ears. I rate Animals, Meddle, Obscured by clouds, The wall and Atom heart mother as their best albums

Yeah...this thread will either end in everybody agreeing with you, or a massive chaotic war. Which sounds more likely?

And darn it, Genesis rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

though I do agree about the Pink Floyd comment.

I've never though of Genesis as a top 5 of 70's..... It would be a Tull, Floyd, Crimson, Yes and Gentle Giant. Genesis is IMHO in a second league together with bands like Rush, ELP and Camel.
The best you can is good enough...

Gentle Giant is my favorite 70s band and Jethro Tull made my favorite album of all time. I might rank Yes higher than Tull, but you're certainly on to something. Wink

Genesis were very good in the late 70s and in 1980 also. Get Trick of the tail, Wind and wuthering, And then there were three, Duke and the 1976-1982 outtake cd from the box set. That is enough to say to me Genesis from 1976-1980 were very good and just as good as the 1970-1974 period.
