I found the vocals on both awful but Focus had the comedy factor added so it's my preference granted I've only heard "Unquestionable Presence" of Atheist's discography |

Atheist's albums were each fairly interesting. Cynic's Focus was excellent. but no one could claim the vocals were anything except bloody awful.

Atheist for me. Hardcore stuff but it is a masterpiece of its own genre. I like Cynic too but i find their albums a little bit boring..

I am a huge fan of Cynic, whereas Atheist never really were able to keep my interest. Cynic's genre of music is absolutely unique, I love the mixture of Death Metal with Jazz/Fusion

Focus is one of those rare albums that really are "one of a kind", but Cynic only released one album, whereas Atheist released three, my two favorites being Unquestionable Presence and Elements. So even if Focus is amazing, I pick Atheist.

Difficult one, I love both bands so I can't really decide here.

Honestly those 2 bands are not so bad, definitely experimental and technical, but not because of that really progressive, I think they fit the death metal genre much better than the prog genre, so my vote goes null here.

^^ You definetely should. It took me quite a while. I had sense there was something there from the very beginning, but for a long time I just didn't completely soak in it.

In my opinion "Focus" by Cynic is a great masterpiece of Jazz Death Metal Prog. This album is a great example of technique, feelings and emotions!

You should really make up your mind. It's obvious you DO have a problem with their names, so just say so. And if you do, then it means you care. We won't mind. As long as there is no ignorant comment about the music, we can take all other irrelevant comments. Back on topic, right now I'm with Cynic, maybe because I've seen them live recently. (Though I also had a chance to see Atheist live. I wonder if things would've been different now had I taken that chance... ) |

Cynic because of the Focus album...it's been unsurpassed for me in the jazz-metal genre.

calm down guys, just good fun. The name atheist is a bit "in your face, and I dont care" which I find a little rude, but I dont really care.
like I said, I will check them out.

Even though they only did one album and Atheist came along a couple of years before Cynic,I still pick Cynic.Focus is a landmark album and the musicians on that album are legends, and deservedly so.

two of the worst? i always liked their names, however simple... well, atheist is a bit shameless (especially given the fact that their biggest album is "unquestionable presence"). so "yes" is a good band name? or "the beatles"? "emerson lake and palmer"? come on man, if you're gonna pick on names there are far more ripe targets... as for me, Cynic is better, i always go to sleep for Atheist. |
