One year at the site. Wow, it's been a short one!

Thank you all for making this site what it is, making me want to come back every day. I've had the chance to discover so much new music, so fast and successfully I never thought it possible.
But the best thing is still all the new friends I've found here. I've always been cynical about forums and "internet friends", and look where that got me! LOL

Clappies and huggies for all of you:

Hey Linus, from one newbie to another, my suggestion is to listen to everything and anything. You never know what's going to catch your ear It would be a shame to miss something exciting because someone else's tastes were a little more restrictive than your's might be. My favourites are Emerson Lake and Palmer (specifically Tarkus and Triliogy), Peter Gabriel ( for me pretty much anything) Rammstein (if you like German heavy stuff but maybe not considered "real" prog), anything with Tony Levin involved is a safe bet. But beware of the "commercial prog", stuff like Spock's Beard or Dream Theatre are good but still commercial in my opinion.

LOL

Thank you for those recs, JD, but I'm afraid I'm rather familiar with two of those three bands. Rammstein I just don't like, so I'm not eager to explore their music any further Smile

Linus, I was actually surprised to find out just how "new" you are to the site

I'm so glad I didn't make an intro post when I joined!

I kinda like it. It's cute now when you look back at it.

I also remember my first thread in the actual forums, seeking recommendations for heavier, unusual symphonic prog, where Micky immediately pointed towards Italy.

I simply said that I felt intimated by the thought of Italian music LOL

And therein lies my point. I may think they are great but someone else won't care for them at all. That's why i say just listen to as much as you can and make up your own mind. Chances are, if you don't like Rammstein then you probably won't like much Prog Metal or if you don't like Genesis then you probably won't like Marillion and so forth. But by listening and learning about your own tastes you'll continue to grow an appreciation for the genre and associated genres. i have about 2600 CD's and 1000 vinyls in my collection. Some weher hits and some were misses. But I still prefer to hear something by a band myself to make up my own mind.
Good luck with your explorations.

To be called as a Newbie is not so bad for us, for the meaning of always freshly thinking 'bout prog. Wink
