Bodan Arsovski is a bass guitarust, who was born in Macedonia in 1956. He is well known as one of the founders of the legendary group "Leb I Sol".

In the period of 20 years he released 12 LP records and 4 CD's together with the band and performed in the following cities: New York 1991(C.B.G.B.), Chicago 1982 (Tuts), Washington 1982 (9:30), London 1994. (Astoria, Ronnie Scott's), Paris 1994. (New Morning), Amsterdam 1994 (Paradiso), Prague, Belgrade, Zagreb, Sarajevo, Ljubljana, Skopje, Thessaloniki......

His first solo project "Endiess View" was released on CD in the Year 1995. In 1996 he got Macedonian awards for the best CD, the best concert and the best composer for the same year.

The "Endless View' aroused a big interest among the people in

his country and the promoters from Belgrade, Zagreb, Trieste, Thessaloniki, Wien, Brusseles, Sofia, Cape Town etc.

The next CD "Tiresias" (1998) includes his music for antique tragedies "Bacchants" and "Medea" by Euripides. Because of this material he takes the offer to make an opera for Seneca's "Oedipus" which will be directed by English director David Gothard.

On 10th of Sep. 1999 he had a benefit concert together with Philip Glass, John Gibson, and Foday Musa Suso trio in Skopje, Universal Hall.

The concert activites are with his "Ezgija - Orchestra", which is a group of six members. They are playing the music based on Broken beat patterns, melodic lines with elements of Macedonian folklore and improvisations with "ezgija" feelings, reflecting sensibility of modern in the world music.

Ezgija is an old Macedoniam word for specific condition of increased sense during the play. That's why in some way Bodan Arsovski & Ezgija Orchestra are cultural reprensatative of his country.

I have 'Endless View' and the musical concept is the same musical concept of Pat Metheny (pratically Bodan plays with bass the same music of Pat with guitar).

Listening to the music samples (under more).  My real player is not automatically opening them (plug in problem -- says no suitable plug ins), so had to open it direct from real player (using that as my browser).  Short samples.  Based on "Other music", I would not expect it in JRF (more world music), but obviously that's not enough to judge, and of course he was founding member of Leb i Sol.  That said, Leb i Sol moved from progressive jazz-rock, and I hear nothing there that would make the music I heard there suitable (but more to check out).  And there's no other category where  I could think it suitable based on those.  But those samples are limited, and of course I will not stop there as I had not expected that as most promising anyway. Knew I was not starting at the best place.

Going to smaples from Endless View.  Course it's more promising (mix of ethnic and jazz and electro), but still not something I would expect in the archives (or strongly consider if it were not for the Leb i Sol connection):

Tiresias: blend of electronic, world.  Broken Beat:  This is an interesting one; the most progressive so far.  Oh yeah, that's nice jazz-fusion -- good.  And considerably more suitable for the archives.  Like this one (well i like it all, but i mean in terms of PA's jazz-fusion). Now to Aetheia.  This is interesting,  folky, melodic, accessible (not really PA worthy I would think based on those, but good).  Memories is well-done (sound would be better if it was fuller; bigger production).

JRF would proably be the best category for consideration (folk if one thought about ethnic).  Very much on the world music side, and Broken beat would make the strongest case based on those short samples for Jazz-Rock Fusion.  Anyway, I will mention it to the JRF team, but I rather doubt they'll make it a priority.

Bodan Arsovski & Kokan Dimusevski's Sketches From the Past certianly looks like a modern jazz album that I'd like tio check out (reworking of Leb i Sol music).

Pianist/keyboardist Kokan Dimusevski and electric bassist Bodan Arsovski are going deep into their past for this release. Shortly before their initial band Leb i Sol’s reunification, the duo decided to rework some of the band’s compositions. Sketches From The Past is its most intimate release to date. Leb i Sol’s members have always been known for their second-to-none instrumental prowess and this album showcases plenty, surprises included.

Good things never age and time can only tell what is timeless or not. From the opening notes, Sketches has an aura of comforting familiarity. There’s the impeccable playing, the artful arrangements and a brimful of melodies over dark narratives. Having played together with the band, and with guest appearances on each other’s solo projects over the years, a strong bond was created between Dimusevski and Arsovski. There is an almost telepathic communication that often brings fantastic results. They make intuitive, shape-shifting music that breaks new ground with its subtle, sophisticated rhythmic interplay and achingly lyrical beauty. Most of it is the product of improvisations that succeeds in avoiding the well worn ruts of so many other stabs at musical freedom.

More than on any other album, Sketches allows more space its for influences to show up. Arsovski’s talking bass, at times, resembles Eberhard Weber’s tone and Dimusevski resembles both Jarrett and Rainer Bruninghaus. The presence of Jan Erik Kongshaug, ECM’s sound engineer for many years, additionally boosts resemblances to the sound associated with the famous label.

That only puts the music within a known framework and doesn’t tell much about the content. The music is warm, dark and stunning in its stark presentation that is deceptively complex. Behind the “days of the week” titles, fans of Leb i Sol will recognize compositions like “Devetka,” “Rucni Rad,” “Damar,” “Sumorno Prolece,“ “Rebus“ and “Skakavac.” The musicians are deconstructing and reinventing the original compositions in such a manner that only a hint of the melody will allow the listener to guess from which composition it stems.

The conversations are so intimate that it's almost inappropriate to be interrupted. Dimusevski is magnificent, throwing playful and deep melodies over Arsovski’s deeply resonant bass. This effort resounds with spontaneity and freshness as well as a warmth and familiarity that make for some rewarding interaction. Each piece is given time to unfold and the results are quietly intense, sometimes exalted, music-making.

Sketches proves the power of collaboration, and this has proven as a truism in jazz: when great artists meet, the result often far outweighs what each artist can do individually. This is mature modern jazz that seamlessly marries acoustic and electronic aesthetics. In a way, Sketches from the Past is one of the best ECM releases never to be released by ECM....
