And now he wants to satisfy his prog cravings. I've acquired a good amount of digital music from Rhapsody and eMusic, and right now I have a few extra credits I got from MyCokeRewards. Can any of you hip cats recommend some obscure prog titles by artists from the 70s or 80s?

Obscure gems. I feel that Comus' first Utterance fits that exceptionally well, and it has become one of my favorite albums in the progressive folk category.. Triumvirat's first few albums, especially Spartacus.
Perhaps a trip through some Italian prog with PFM, or Banco, Per Un Amico and Darwin!, respectively. I am not too sure what to recommend you, as I don't know what is obscure to you. |

Good examples of stuff I've acquired digitally include Tempano, Companyia Elèctrica Dharma, Cathedral and Babylon. It's stuff that's generally not available on CD because it has to be imported or is out of print.

The first three are available, but the Lord Flimnap one requires two more credits than what I have on hand. Still, that's the sort of stuff I'm interested in. Keep 'em coming, folks!

Those albums are all available on eMusic ... I don't know about Rhapsody (I don't go there often because it's for US residents only), but I guess for these albums there's a chance they're available there too. At least I know that many albums that are available at eMusic are available at iTunes and Amazon MP3. |

I had an eMusic subscription last summer. It was great for prog albums (Nektar =2 credits? sign me up!). I used it because I was far from my amazing Berkeley record stores and their bargains. Amazon's alright too. I once got some Pepsi points and used them to get some Miles Davis, Seru Giran and more Miles Davis. Also scored Lou Reed's "Transformer" for free thanks to a promo code. And now, I still need to use my Rhapsody promo points.
I'm not big on spending actual money on non-physical zeroes and ones. However, if I have points that let me get music legally, then hey, I'm not complaining. |

^ I already mentioned this in the "CD? MP3" thread: You're not really paying for zeroes and ones - physical or "virtual" - you're paying for the music. Ever since I decided to see it that way, downloads make even more sense to me than CDs. I already have about 1000 of them ... seriously, where's the point in acquiring more and more of them? Eventually I'll need an entire room to store my collection. People who visit me are already alienated by the sheer quantity of CDs ... not impressed, alienated.
I'm actually thinking about reducing the number of CDs in my collection. Sell about 200 of them and use the money to download more albums at eMusic.com (I currently have 160 albums on my "Saved for later" list). |

^ I could ... but of course I wouldn't sell the best parts of my collection. I don't even know if I could pick 200 albums ... probably more like the 100 worst of the 1000 I have.
