And I'm already a "Groupie" ... which is strange, BTW.

My name is Matt, I've only been a prog fan for a few years now. I've always been a fan of musicianship, even before I became a musician. When I was in high school, my favorite band was Megadeth. Unlike a lot of thrash bands, their songs were very well written and virtuosic without coming off as pretentious, I liked that.

I decided I wanted to play bass guitar... I had no idea what a bass guitar did in a band Embarrassed but I liked the big strings! After trying to find my own style for a while, I discovered Primus and that became my gateway drug to "weird music." I became in love with music that went so far away from normal it made some people uncomfortable.

My first prog obsession was King Crimson, I heard "In the court" a while ago, liked it, but it didn't stick with me. I got ahold of Red, it was from that point that prog dominated my life.

After narrowly escaping the clutches of King Crimson (listened to nothing but KC for about a year), I started expanding and discovering what an insanely diverse world prog is. Krautrock and Magma were the most recent obsession. Lately though, it's been all about the RIO stuff (and recent dabblings in the Canturbury scene) following the Henry Cow family tree and discovering an endless world of bizarre music. Oh, and Samla Mammas Manna, who make me proud to be of Swedish decent.

I'll quit rambling, but prog absolutely dominates my musical listening. I just love the combination of musical skill and really spitting in the face of mainstream pop music.

Always great to have someone else around who's into Krautrock/Canterbury/RIO/Zeuhl/(Electronic somewhat I assume?).

Oh, and a fellow bassist too?  Sweet!

Yup, I dig on some electronic music for sure. I've got a friend who listens to nothing but IDM type music, and it's certainly rubbed off on me.

Thanks for having me. LampWackoYing YangWackoLamp

See, that's why I joined this forum, to find answers. I never considered the phallic element, it makes too much sense.

Congratulations, you've graduated to RIO, now move on to the next stage of your listening: avant-garde jazz. ;-)

Seriously, it  was an easy step forward for me. I recommend Albert Ayler.

Approve Too late, I love Albert Ayler. Actually, I'm listening to Derek Bailey and Evan Parker do their thang right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjmjOZGuMQQ

I also went through a big noise rock phase, at some point it's going to come full circle and I'll listen to nothing but Anne Murray.

I don't doubt it, in fact I understand she's doing a joint album with Masami Akita called Merzbow &
Murray
