Yeah, but thats because i find a lot of bands and then play them alphabetically
Aphabetically.... I wish lastfm had worked for me.  When I was fairly new to this PA site, I would go to the category  ("genre") pages and go through the tracks 'til something grabbed me (not having unlimited time, if it didn't grab me quickly I would move on).  I quickly found that French bands were more likely to appeal to me in various categories. Sampling is a great way -- I'd rather use my own ears to get started than ask others unless my tastes are really defined and I'm looking for something specific. If you find you like a track by an artist you've heard, then get the album it's off.  That worked for me.  I find youtube to be a very good source since I can look up something I already like and discover lots of related music that I will like (and google when I'm looking  for something with well defined parameters).
Thanks! That's excaxtly what i mean.

But i think i will order these albums soon:

King Crimson: ITCOTCK - Red - LTiA - INWOP - Starless and Bible Black
Yes: Close to the Edge - Fragile - TFTO - The Yes Album - Relayer
ELP: Brain Salad Surgery - ELP (debut) - Tarkus - Trilogy
Genesis: SEBTP - TLLDOB - Foxtrot
Pink Floyd: DSOTM - Animals - The Wall - Wish You Were Here
Jethro Tull: Thick As A Brick - Aqualung - Minstrel in the Gallery
VDGG: Pawn Hearts - Godbluff - The Quiet Zone/ The Pleasure Dome

What do you think for a prog "newbie"?

Nice.  A lot of the essentials of Prog in there.  Although I'm with Logan that I'm quite suprised that you've listened to bands like Art Bears and Gong but haven't listened to the well-known classics yet.Confused

Don't buy a Kansas album.  I say this not only because I don't endorse their brand of soft rock pop prog but because you could always pick up the entire Kansas discography on vinyl at someones garage sale for 5 bucks later on. Tongue

Caravan - For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night - In the Land of Grey and Pink

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats - Uncle Meat - The Grand Wazoo - Absolutely Free

And then 3 Magma albums, but what should i get of Magma?

It depends where you're coming from. I was a fan of avant-garde jazz before regular jazz, and there are still a fair amount of classic bands that I haven't heard a full album from and probably never will.
