Romantic Warriors - A Progressive Music Saga Documentary

DVD NOW AVAILABLE FOR SALE ON AMAZON!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0044ZDI5G

In the early 1970s, Richard Nixon was in the White House. U.S. troops were fighting in Vietnam and progressive rock music from bands like Yes, King Crimson and Genesis conquered the earth. But time marches on and music trends change. The war ended and in the span of a few years progressive rock faded from the landscape. Still, this new documentary by D.C. filmmakers Adele Schmidt and José Zegarra Holder proves it didn't disappear. "Romantic Warriors" is an engaging look into the world of today's progressive rock movement. From bands to record, label owners, studio execs to festival organizers and the fans themselves, a cross-section of who and what comprises this vibrant, passionately driven community is examined via performance footage and interviews. While the music's international, cross-cultural appeal receives due coverage, the Eastern United States and the Baltimore-Philadelphia region, specifically, are acknowledged as the cradle of Prog's post-1970s artistic renaissance

A bit more about the movie:

About the Film
This feature length documentary film highlights ten contemporary progressive music bands: Cabezas De Cera - Avant/Fusion (Mexico), Cheer-Accident - Avant/Experimental (USA), Deluge Grander - Symphonic (USA), D.F.A. - Jazz/Fusionl (Italy), Karmakanic - Symphonic (Sweden), La Maschera Di Cera - Symphonic (Italy), Oblivion Sun - Symphonic (USA),Phideaux - Symphonic (USA), Qui - Jazz Canterbury (Japan) and Rob Martino - Chapman Stick Player (USA).  These musicians tell their stories, influences, creative process, challenges they face, and how they sell music in the era of Internet downloads. While the music’s international, cross-cultural appeal receives due coverage, the Eastern United States and the Baltimore-Philadelphia region, specifically, are acknowledged as the cradle of prog’s post-1970s artistic renaissance.

This film is also about the passion and spirit of progressive music genre, its music, its festivals, and the ecosystem that supports it.

Round Table Review from the Dutch Progressive Rock Page

Says Dave Baird:

"This is a pretty well made and put together film, plus unlike other prog documentaries we aren't lumbered with hordes of "celebrities" saying how much they loved such-and-such a band since they were a kid, it's real-life and meaningful stuff. As a prog-head I found it interesting and informative, plus I picked up on a couple of new bands that I'll seek out further. For non progressive fans it can still be interesting to learn about this sub-culture they're perhaps unaware of - my wife would enjoy to watch it I'm sure, and perhaps anyone culturally minded, but for many outside our genre it would probably be that bit too heavy in places (especially those Cheer-Accident tracks…). Short review by USAprogmusic

Eric Pseja says:

"As the film leaves that notion behind and continues towards its conclusion, a very important philosophy finally takes form with a subtle, pleading eloquence – Progressive Rock doesn't need “champions” to convince people that it's superior to other lesser musical genres.  What it needs is “romantic warriors” that will teach the patience required to understand Progressive Rock's complexities and the open-mindedness that's necessary to be able to revel in the euphoria of finally "getting it."

This looks like a great DVD! I'll be buying it for sure. I just wish they edited this stuff here at home so that I didn't have to put my credit card info on the web yet again.

There's never been a doubt in my mind regarding the survival of prog music, though. All throughout the 80's and 90's it has been alive and well, even in Latin America. Specially if you pull jazz fusion and prog metal into the genre. It has just faded from the mainstream, but it's still really extended. That's what I loved about working in Washington DC Translation Services now, moving up here has been great, and tons of artists come through here all the time. I get to see all those guys I used to listen to live!

I'm very interested in the DVD, specially because I admit i don't see the connection between some of the bands it covers and some of the references cited in the description. Should be interesting.

About Romantic Warriors
Romantic Warriors looks at the progressive rock scene, largely based on the East Coast but composed of musicians from around the world, through the eyes of recording studio managers, music distributors, festival organizers, the considerable fan base that supports the progressive rock world, and the musicians themselves. Progression Magazine called it "a masterful job of capturing the essence of progressive music as an underground phenomenon". The film suggests that there is a renaissance in progressive rock, driven by the tools of the Internet and by young bands crafting a personal sound. Romantic Warriors airs as a presentation of WPSU (Penn State Public Broadcasting) and is distributed by The National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA).

National program distributor NETA (National Educational Telecommunications Association) will feed the "Romantic Warriors - A Progressive Music Saga" 60-minute program on April 26th via satellite making the program available nationwide to all public television stations.

However, the hard work comes after the feed to follow up one by one and encourage the program directors to program the show and secure air dates.

Stations may record the feed if they are aware of it and think that the program is a match for their audience. Over the last two weeks, we have received confirmation from several stations that they will record the program feed on April 26 (although this does not mean that they have decided to broadcast it).

We had expected the first few confirmed broadcasts to be scheduled in June, but we did not anticipate that serendipity happens sometimes! Two of the program directors we recently contacted are ardent progressive music fans, so we are very excited to report the following stations have decided to do early broadcasts in May:

WXEL, BOYNTON BEACH, FL: May 20 @ 12pm noon
WEST VIRGINIA PUBLIC BROADCASTING: May 27@ 8pm & May 28@ 11pm
WKAR, E. LANSING, MI: August 8 @ 10pm

Our heartfelt thanks go to Debbie Sears and Debi Byrd!
We couldn't do this work alone. We received additional outreach support from Debbie Sears and Debi Byrd. Both have started to hit the phone lines reaching out to broadcast stations on a daily basis.

Debbie Sears is the producer of the radio show Prog-Rock Diner on Fairfax Radio and for 6 years she was on the band selection committee at ProgDay (Chapel Hill, NC) the most important outdoor progressive rock festival in the East Coast.

Debi Byrd is a progressive rock fan since she was a teenager. She is a huge supporter of the scene and joined the selection committee of ProgDay 2011.

Both of them are exceptionally outstanding in their support for progressive rock and I think we could not have gotten better voices to convince program directors that there is an audience for progressive rock on public television. For more information on the film, please visit http://www.progdocs.com/ and like our FB page at
