From prog, Red is the only one I can think of off hand. My picks would be Abbey Road and The Visitors.

How about The Power to Believe (2003)? i strongly believe this will be KC's final album, unless Mr. Fripp decides otherwise. It is a very strong album, and considered one of their best (THE best by some) also, it's their 13th album, by a band named after the devil... Edited by darkshade - December 02 2010 at 21:17 |

Abbey Road is not only the best Beatles album, but also the best album by any musician, ever. I feel safer at night when there's an Abbey Road CD in my room.
Beethoven's last (9th) Symphony is considered his best work. There are other examples in classical music. |

Probably not my favorite but an honorable mention is Henry Cow's farewell album Western Culture which is far better than any of the band's previous work IMO.

The Power To Believe is a great album, but I believe that are very few people who believe it's KC's best.

I don't get this. It makes just as much sense to perma-ban anyone who even mentions King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, or Genesis. Any and all aspects of these bands' careers have been talked to death much more than Marillion. |

Nice. Abbey Road and Synchronicity by The Police are two good examples. I think the problem is that not many of the greatest prog bands have decisive breakups - they just keep reconfiguring and doing lineup changes and so forth. So there's no reason to describe, say, King Crimson's latest album as their "last" - it's just the most recent. How about worst last albums? I nominate Calling All Stations. |

Would Liquid Tension Experiment 2 count? not another OFFICIAL studio LTE album had been released.... Liquid Trio Experiment certainly doesn't count...

Re Beethoven, well, he had the final string quartets that are considered masterpieces after the 9th Symphony, which was completed 3 years before his death.

Anglagard - Epilog But seriously, this is one of my top 10 albums and I don't think they could have done any better after this one. |
