In terms of "westernised" tacos - the kind that Old El Paso sells - I'm a fan of soft shell. Trying to get away from the store bought stuff though, these days. We might buy hard shells but we normally use tortillas for the soft shells, you can eat them as they are, or my mom used to put them in the oven with wet towels to steam them which is also great. For the spices, my wife uses a combination of cumin, garlic powder, soy sauce (for colour and a bit of salt), and some other stuff I don't even know, but it tastes way better than the store bought stuff.

As for toppings, I'm a cheese, sour cream, tomato kind of guy myself. On soft shells I put in lettuce as well, but in hard shells there's just no space left. Oh, and it's important that when the meat is cooked (we try and use ground turkey since we're flavoring it anyways but sometimes our roommates complain that it has less flavor and we go back to beef) it has onion and maybe even garlic cooked with it.

I've never made more "traditional" tacos - the kind you get when you go to a relatively more authentic mexican place that are wrapped in soft shells with sauce drizzled on top and come with refried beans and rice, that you're supposed to eat with a fork and knife. I must admit though, those are also delicious.

Gimme a good hard taco any day.

Actually, I like the abomination that is the combo hard/soft shell.  Take the soft tortilla and slather it with refried beans, then place the hard shell on top of that and fill it with the usual.  Then fold the soft one around the hard one, and voila, the best of both worlds and the soft shell more or less contains the messiness of the hard.

It's the truth though. Authentic Mexican tacos are the best. Big smile

I'll have none of this altered states snobbery...if you can make it to Taco Hell, you can make it to a real Mexican establishment. Cool

I do, every now and then. I don't eat out much (basically only when my parents want a family dinner with my brother and I) and no matter what I always like Taco Bell tacos more. I can dig a lot of other meals from authentic Mexican places, but if the Taco Bell hard shell taco qualifies to be called a taco, then it is the best taco I have ever come across, authentic or not.

The Mexican software testers I used to work with took us down to one of the local taco trucks one day and we had the taco de lengue.  The lengue tastes more or less and has the consistency of fatty pork.  I suppose it was properly sauced.   Given that I'll eat fatty pork without regard to the health implications, them were some delicioso tacos.  Really, I'd prefer to know it's not lengue, but I'd likewise prefer to know my kielbasa does not contain pork snouts.  I eat 'em all the same.  You pump 'em right through.

You betcha.  Not the tongue ones though.  I usually go the hard shell taco kit route.  Total convenience.
