Topic: Hello There Posted: July 02 2012 at 05:02 |
Hi Everyone - My musical loves are classic prog, psychedelia, folk rock, krautrock, tradtional blues, far out jazz and some classical. There 's so much good and varied taste on this excellent site - a great place to share ideas, thoughts, new sounds etc. I'm looking forward to being part of it :-)

Sounds like some good taste there. Welcome aboard. Care to be more specific with some artists you like?

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone - The 'Main' Artsists for me would be: Prog: Yes (classic era), King Crimson, Soft Machine ( Wyatt era), VDGG, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Gentle Giant, Caravan, Gryphon, Gong, Egg, ELP, Robet Wyatt, Kevin Ayers. Psych: Syd;s Floyd, Soft Machine, Traffic, Mighty Baby, Arthur Brown, Pearls Before Swine, July, Family, Nirvana (uk), Andwella's Dream, Fleurs Des Lys,The Move, Skip Bifferty. Krautrock: Amon Dull 2, Faust, Can Alt/Folk Rock : Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Incredible String Band, Mellow Candle, Mark Fr,, Trees, Forest, Fresh Maggots, Heron, Comus, Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Robin Williamson. Jazz: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane, Charlie Mingus, Ornette Coleman, Thelonius Monk, Roland Kirk, Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp. Blues: Son House, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Howling Wolf, Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee, Lightning Hopkins. Classical: Sibelius, Stravinsky, Delius, Vaughan Williams,. I must have forgotten some artisits and there's so many others linked to the stuff that we all like, so if anyone here was to do a complete list of who/what inspires them musically, I'm sure it would take an entire thread of it's own! Love & Peace :-)

Have you ever listened to Charley Patton? He's similar to Robert Johnson but probably a bit more refined.

Oh yes! One of the masters. I discovered him when he was referenced in the Dylan song High Water. I also discovered Odetta, Muddy Waters etc ago via Dylan. It's all linked and you can follow the chain of inspiration. I forgot to mention Muddy as well. In my teenage years it was Van, The Stones, Dylan etc that gave me the road map that I've followed ever since. Prog, however, is my nature more of a journey into uncharted waters when you begin, and all the better for it!

TFTO is genius. Countless amazing highs, some wonderful flaws, and a perfect encapsulation of what is prog. I love Relayer in places, but I don't think Jazz Fusion really suited Yes, but it's great album nonetheless and shames all the 80s/90s and recnt output. ps: Magnification is the exception .

You have very eclectic tastes; excellent. I love most of what you list (I'm not that familiar with blues, and its something I should explore more of).
