I rarely get this excited about a music find, but wait till you hear this! I stumbled upon this band when researching about early mellotron use, and this song popped up: http://youtu.be/gwCMzYmtC-s
Manfred Mann's Earth Band is on progarchives, but not his older '60s stuff. As great as that song is, this second song I found, "You're My Girl", is truly MINDBLOWING. Red by King Crimson, anyone? Check it out: http://youtu.be/UMT-2u8rNDo

Listened to that track.....doesn't really 'sound like' Red to me though there are similar chord structures in it.
Not sure if I would even call it proto prog......decent early track nevertheless.

I know it's just the dissonant chords that are probably in the whole-tone scale like Red, but the strange melody, the creepy chimes...it's at least up there with anything on Revolver.

It is in someways unfortunate that the structure of the PA does not permit the "history" of a band to be documented as well as it should. 'As Is' was/is a great Psychedelic album from what is essentially Manfred Mann's Chapter Two, (not really obscure, just a little forgotten), but whether it constitutes Proto-Prog is a matter of debate since Chapter Three, (which was most certainly was Progressive Jazz-Rock), was conceived as a reaction to the two earlier hit-oriented Manfred Mann bands. However, some of the more experimental/psychedelic tracks from 'As Is' (and possibly from the soundtrack to 'Up The Junction') can be seen as Proto-Chapter Three even if the more (proto) art-rock direction of 'Mighty Garvey' moved away from those earlier pscyh/jazz-rock beginnings, but I'm not so sure that makes it Proto-Prog as such.

Personally, I think Chapter Three is woefully overlooked, overshadowed as it is by the more successful Earth Band.

@SteveG haha well this is progarchives where every sub-subgenre needs to be meticulously categorized. Proto-prog, experimental/psych rock, prog related...whatever, the end result is the same--interesting music that prog fans should like. So The Beach Boys are too pop to be proto. They still rule!

It's not that hard, you just click on "insert movie" and copy in the video reference (not the whole YouTube URL). Sometimes you get an error first time saying it can't insert so just do it again and it works.
