So many GREAT bands.... but a strange selection though.

Wouldn't really call Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, Television, Devo, Pere Ubu and a few others there punk.

No Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Crass, plus loads of others??

And even though I wouldn't call The Stooges punk that's who I've voted for. Iggy's the man....!
I suppose you could call them proto punk along with the New York Dolls who are not there either.

O no! here we go (neo-punk, post-punk, punk-collabrators, etc)

Well, I think that Post-punk it's the normal evolution of punk (just like Hardcore is). Anyway, I don't like labelling bands. So it's all punk, and Dead Kennedys is f**kin great!

Not sure I'd totally agree there (still got a soft spot for some 70s symphonic albums) but I'd take most of that list over most neo prog or prog metal any day.

The Fall got my vote in the end.

Indeed! Although they were only really punk in attitude - the music went way beyond punk; for example I'd hardly call "Golden Brown" or "Strange Little Girl" punk, and "Aural Sculptures" was a complete departure.  Even "No More Heroes" wasn't pure punk - the structure and arrangement seems closer to the Doors than the Sex Pistols or the Vibrators.

And calling the Ramones punk seems dubious, to say the least - and The Fall? Joy Division? That's like saying Stiff Little Fingers or XTC were punk

I almost voted for the Buzzcocks as the epitome of punk, but ended up voting for The Damned. I love their cover of "Alone Again Or", and "Machine Gun Etiquette" is a blinding album. Their output is so incredibly varied that it's hard to consider them purely punk. Phantasmagoria has progressive leanings, and certainly a psychedelic 60s edge with tracks like "Grimly Fiendish".

"Damned, Damned, Damned" is widely reported to be the very first British Punk album. The Vibrators debut was the third (where are they?) and The Sex Pistols were a lowly 3rd.

I'd also have included the Slits, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Nena Hagen, the Angelic Upstarts, Crass, Sham 69 and Killing Joke, with consideration given to the Clash and Subhumans (a grossly overlooked band, IMO, along with the later incarnations Culture Shock and Citizen Fish, who wrote some amazing music).

And what about Plastic Bertrand or the Monks?

...and does anyone remember who did the song "Looking through Gary Gilmour's Eyes"?

Of the 70s symphonic bands, I like Camel and VDGG. Yes, it's not what I really like, but I can hear. But punk, of all types and styles, it's a passion for me. Just like Avant-garde prog, Brian Eno or Stoner Metal, and some others kind of music...

The Fall is wonderful!

Wire and The Velvet Underground are amazing.  I went with the VU due to their massive influence on all popular music.

On a sidenote, some people on this forum are way too close minded.  As soon as they hear the word punk they have a knee-jerk reaction and think of all the stereotypes associated with the genre.  Ironically, that's probably how most people view prog.

I agree with most of this I have always thought of The Stranglers as a Doors influenced band I mean La Folie(?sp) isn't too punk either is it.

Did you ever get "The Black Album" by the Dammed as well? Again not very punk.. even has violins on it

Yeah, I was another subhumans fan saw them in a little pub in Putney and they were excelent..

What about Rudimentry Peni, Discharge, Vice Squad, Rubella Ballet, in fact alot of the No Future and Crass label acts... Plus I suppose you could include some Oi bands as well..

o the memories...

Found out who did "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" - it was the Adverts. Cracking song with manic lyrics about a murderer on Death Row who decides that he's got no use for his eyes any more, so he donates them to science.

http://www.comnet.ca/~rina/adverts.html - http://www.comnet.ca/~rina/adverts.html

I never got to see Subhumans, but I saw Culture Shock many times on the underground circuit (disused warehouse gigs in London, impromtu gigs in fields in the middle of nowhere, that sort of thing), and I saw Citizen Fish at "properly organised" gigs.

http://archive.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/2000/citizenfish.html - http://archive.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/2000/citizenfish.h tml

All of Culture Shock's output is sterling stuff - an unutterably perfect blend of ska, punk and Dick's socio-political ramblings that are so mad they're nearly genius. I don't think you can get it on CD though.

To me, punk is also great because of the lyrics. In one hand, prog rock ALWAYS had CRAPPY lyrics. But some punk bands really did it well... I won't even say Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra (the Noam Chomsky of rock and roll) is the best lyricist ever. Instead, one absolutely GREAT song of Flipper, one of the best lyrics I ever had the chance to read. Here it is:

Flipper - Ever

Ever live a life that's real
Full of zest, but no appeal?
Ever had to really cry,
Cry so much you want to die?
Ever feel that you've been had?
Had so much that you turn mad?
Ever been so depressed,
That those you turn to, you bring distress?
Ever sit in tormenting silence,
That turns so loud, you start to scream?
Ever take control of a dream,
And play all the parts, and set all the scenes?
Ever do nothing
And gain nothing from it?
Ever feel stupid,
And then you know you really are?
Ever think you're smart
And find out that you aren't?
Ever play the fool,
And find that you're even worse?
Ever look at a flower
And hate it?
Ever see a couple kissing
And get sickened by it?
Ever wish the human race didn't exist,
And realize you're one too?

Ever isn't just one of the most brilliant lyrics on rock and roll, but above all it's a kind of a frightening universal application autobiographical report, showing what exists of more obscure and mediocre in all of us.

Bad Brains, Mother's Finest, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Fear , Nip Drivers, Jim Carroll Band, The Crumbsuckers, Hüsker Dü, X, Gun Club , just to name a few, but I voted for Dead Kennedys because (like someone else already pointed out), he was one of the primary voices of that era of culture and music ("he" being Jello Biafra, of course).

BTW, I think punk had one thing in common with prog in that its music represented a conscious attempt to produce something different, heartfelt, and emotional.  Two of the many differences are that

1.  Punk was so infused with destructive behaviour that it largely bought about its own demise through simple attrition (kind of like religious cults that preach celibacy ), and

2.  Punks's best days are behind it because the genre pretty much stopped growing after 1979 or so (IMHO).

This poll shows I guess the difference between what a Brit considers punk and an American might. To my mind e.g Talking Heads, Velvet Underground are definitely NOT punk. Of the above list the best band for me is either Talking Heads or Television, but the best punk band...and they were OK.... were the Clash. That's not me saying" I like them so put them on the list"...they were considered by many the best of what punk - at least in Britain - was about; angry young men with strong political messages, and some good tumes. Your list really is incomplete without them!!

Not on the list but Punk credentials, although they also touched on reggae, ska & jazz. They had a talented guitarist who even had long hair (well by punk standards in '77). Saw them in '78 I think and have liked them ever since.

Check out some of these Citizen Fish lyrics;

You were too radical, cynical, political
Stopping the disease before it got critical
Marked out as 'dangerous' (words are so ridiculous)
'infordiagnosis' - a government process
Bits of legality thought up by the ministry
Making it necessity to cancel your activity
Telling judge and family about 'national security'

Some mentioned the Stranglers; but the Stranglers are more prog than punk (indeed I wouldn't mind the addition of the Stranglers to the archives at all. They used real polyphony in some of their songs, a trait even most accepted prog-bands don't master. Their album "Black and White" definitely is a prog album).
As for my favourite punk band (and they are progressive punk, in a way): Inner City Unit. I highly recommend "Pass Out!", "Punkadelic" and "The President Tapes".
Oh, and I would hardly call Joy Division a punk band. Neither are the Velvet Underground or the Talking Heads.

i guess i just never really "got" punk. maybe these are just misconceptions, but it always seemed to me to be a genre more concerned about rebellion and political angst than about music. personally i never found enough musical intricacy/originality to interest me. i would say i dont like punk for the same reason i dont like grunge. it's a form of music whose central focus is not the music.

honestly i'm not trying to put down punk at all, but does anybody else have this conception of punk or am i just off base?

I voted for Joy Division, allthough I never even considered that punk. Where are the Stranglers? I bought the "No more Herous" album when it came out in 1977 and I never regretted that, I still think it's an excellent album (and even give it an occasional spin sometimes), and in those days they were certainly considered punk.

I was a huge punk (not post-punk, but skatepunk, hardcore punk, hardcore, ska, etc.) fan before I got into progressive/alternative rock (which was only couple of months ago...). During that time, I found it completely impossible to listen to anything that wasn't punk or political.. how shallow is that? And now that's how I see punk in general - simple, regressive all-sounds-the-same music. Obviously, there are a few punk bands that stick out, and I still listen to some a bit (none really on that list, apart from Dead Kennedys... infrequently). I have to thank Porcupine Tree for finally breaking the musical forcefield I created around myself.

I guess punk is kind of the opposite of the musical spectrum to progressive rock (that progresses) - as punk is about keeping it simple and not exploring (lyrics and music), while prog is about expanding the musical boundaries and being creative, complex and experimental.

It seems ironic that punk, a majorly left-wing orientated genre, has a rather conservative and traditional sound.

I have a friend who's "punk", clothing and accessories included, and he's a living contradiction.
