I was never a huge punk fan but I love Bad Brains,very different from the usual punk bands

Today, Hüsker Dü. Punk to my ears is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than Symphonic Prog that's almost funny!

So many GREAT bands.... but a strange selection though.

Wouldn't really call Talking Heads, Velvet Underground, Television, Devo, Pere Ubu and a few others there punk.

No Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Crass, plus loads of others??

And even though I wouldn't call The Stooges punk that's who I've voted for. Iggy's the man....!
I suppose you could call them proto punk along with the New York Dolls who are not there either.

O no! here we go (neo-punk, post-punk, punk-collabrators, etc)

Well, I think that Post-punk it's the normal evolution of punk (just like Hardcore is). Anyway, I don't like labelling bands. So it's all punk, and Dead Kennedys is f**kin great!

Not sure I'd totally agree there (still got a soft spot for some 70s symphonic albums) but I'd take most of that list over most neo prog or prog metal any day.

The Fall got my vote in the end.

Indeed! Although they were only really punk in attitude - the music went way beyond punk; for example I'd hardly call "Golden Brown" or "Strange Little Girl" punk, and "Aural Sculptures" was a complete departure.  Even "No More Heroes" wasn't pure punk - the structure and arrangement seems closer to the Doors than the Sex Pistols or the Vibrators.

I almost voted for the Buzzcocks as the epitome of punk, but ended up voting for The Damned. I love their cover of "Alone Again Or", and "Machine Gun Etiquette" is a blinding album. Their output is so incredibly varied that it's hard to consider them purely punk. Phantasmagoria has progressive leanings, and certainly a psychedelic 60s edge with tracks like "Grimly Fiendish".

"Damned, Damned, Damned" is widely reported to be the very first British Punk album. The Vibrators debut was the third (where are they?) and The Sex Pistols were a lowly 3rd.

 

I'd also have included the Slits, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Nena Hagen, the Angelic Upstarts, Crass, Sham 69 and Killing Joke, with consideration given to the Clash and Subhumans (a grossly overlooked band, IMO, along with the later incarnations Culture Shock and Citizen Fish, who wrote some amazing music).

And what about Plastic Bertrand or the Monks?

...and does anyone remember who did the song "Looking through Gary Gilmour's Eyes"?

Of the 70s symphonic bands, I like Camel and VDGG. Yes, it's not what I really like, but I can hear. But punk, of all types and styles, it's a passion for me. Just like Avant-garde prog, Brian Eno or Stoner Metal, and some others kind of music...

The Fall is wonderful!
