Subject: I Seek Obscure Prog Albums to Review
Date Posted: January 26 2022 at 03:28
I've decided to write reviews on this site. I'm mainly looking for the albums that have 0 (zero) ratings on this site. As, they would be rather difficult to come across using the searching tools. Yet, you can recommend me any "obscure" album. If I feel like reviewing it after giving a listen, I'll do it.

I'm quite knowledgeable on prog metal and neo-prog. But, I can take any suggestions. Challenges are good. Plus, if I will be the first to review an album, that would be the best one of it! Tongue

Thanks in advance!

I love the two http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=10681" rel="nofollow - Umberto-albums that's got 1 rating each

Here's two zero ratings I like:
Mark Shreeve http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=71932" rel="nofollow - Phantom + http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=71934" rel="nofollow - Thoughts of War

Two ratings:
Sergej Djokanov http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=60670" rel="nofollow - Green Desert

There's plenty more of course, escpecially with about four-five ratings or less, but no review

Thank you Saperlipopette!, very much appreciated. It will be fine to delve into the unknown prog electronic domains. Thumbs Up

Thanks Drew! I'll check all of them out, and will most probably review various albums among theirs. Actually prog electronic is one of the prog sub-genres that I'm better familiar with. But, I hardly came accross such albums that interested me. I hope I'll discover some hidden gems thanks to you and Saperlipopette!. Cool

Here's a link to the list of un-reviewed albums on PA. You'll have to decide for yourself which ones are "obscure":

Hi,

The only thing that is really bad about that list is that it is almost all of it about singles ... and I'm not sure that "singles" should be what "progressive music" should be all about, specially when it started out as being totally anti the radio formats and its "singles" idea.

But today, we consider everything "songs" and we don't give a sh*t about the database listings, which are so generic as to be sad and a bad representation of what computer code artistry can be ... but it will never be!

Wow. Who compiled that?

Or do releases automatically go there upon addition and then disappear once a review appears?

I'm sooooo curious!!!!

Chances are this is not up your alley, but more recent albums of Rapoon and Charles Hayward have no ratings.

^ The New Criticism movement in literary theories might be beneficial for me in reviewing stuff from sub-genres that I'm virtually clueless about. If I feel confident enough, I'll consider taking all prog sub-genres into consideration for my new challenge. Thank you Christian. Smile

Cool. I'm planning on writing more reviews myself. My rule is that I'll only write a review if I only the album and preferably have heard it at least 2 times. My focus will be mostly on lesser known bands from the recent past but not brand new(so at least a few years old). That isn't written in stone though. I just don't want to do what everyone else is doing.

I recommend:

Chimpan A         -  Chimpan A
Janison Edge     - The Services of Mary Goode
The Eccentronic Research Council - The 1612 Overture

Locating unrated, rather pointless releases I know nothing about (or #7’s, Flexi discs etc…) is relatively simple, so I’ll rather focus on albums I really like with less than five ratings - and no reviews obviously.

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=19338" rel="nofollow - Rabih Abou-Khalil - Al-Jadida (3 ratings) - located under Prog Folk, but it’s really «Arabic Jazz-fusion» (with Sonny Fortune on sax). Wonderful album.

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=71490" rel="nofollow - Klaus Morlock - Penumbra (0 ratings) - not on spotify but "name your price" on on bandcamp, so you can try it out for free. Beautiful and ghostly with mellotrons, woodwinds...
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=57288" rel="nofollow -
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=57288" rel="nofollow - John Renbourn Group - The Enchanted Garden (2 ratings)
A more medieval inspired, less jazzy continuation of Pentangle - and as great imo.

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=10169" rel="nofollow - Pop Workshop - Song of the Pterodactyl (4 ratings) Very worthy Swedish «all star» fusion band featuring Tony Williams on drums. Vol. 1 (2 ratings) is just as nice.

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=70953" rel="nofollow - Trees Speak - Shadow Forms (3 ratings) Driving Kraut/Psych/spacerock. I'm a fan.

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=16624" rel="nofollow - Vasant Rai - Autumn Song (3 ratings) Indo/Raga-prog by the indian master sarod-virtouso - backed by Oregon

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=52384" rel="nofollow - Terje Winther (of Winterstormer) - Electronic Regions (0 ratings) Berlin School/Tangerine Dream-like. 2 hour + long album that slowly builds - so you’ll need some patience. Skillfully done, by an expert in the field - I love it.

-that's all for now:)

As many have stated on this forum earlier, writing the billionth review for household names is also not my thing. The reason why I asked mainly for the albums that have zero ratings was that, it would be hard and time-consuming for me to seek them myself. Plus, if someone says that s/he likes such an album, it is worth considering. Given that, a very large portion of the extremely obscure cultural products probably are so for valid reasons, and it wouldn't interest many to read reviews of an uninteresting album. If some obscure stuff interests someone, the chances that it is worth checking out are bigger.

All in all, I'll not limit myself with solely reviewing such albums. I created this thread for expanding my "playground" and getting help for that. So far so good! Thank you everyone. And to you too, Cambus741. Beer

Just out of curiosity are you planning on buying these albums or listening to them on youtube or spotify or something similar? I've always wondered if people actually buy all the albums they review. Not a big deal. I'm just curious.

It could be a mix of those. But, first round will be on Youtube if available. The rest depends on the allurement of the album.

I cannot give any promises, but I will consider reviewing your albums like any other suggested album here. I'll really take any suggestions into consideration. What is your band's name (if different than your actual name)?

Thanks! You probably got more than enough to digest already, but here's couple more:

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=63864" rel="nofollow - Bohren & der Club of Gore - Sunset Mission (8 ratings) making an exception here for an album that's got a few more ratings. Not so much prog and placing this band in a sub-genre named Math Rock is beyond a joke. Imagine being stuck in Black Lodge (where they hung out in the original Twin Peaks-series) accompanied by the slowest, doom-laden jazz quartet imaginable... forever. I noticed siLLy puPPy's review of http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=63866" rel="nofollow - Black Earth which sums it up nicely - the biggest differences between the two is that the latter album features mellotron.

Chris Hinze Combination - I think my personal favorite http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=56916" rel="nofollow - Mission Suite (5 ratings), the heavy http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=56915" rel="nofollow - Sister Slick (4 ratings) and the gently beautiful http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=56917" rel="nofollow - Virgin Sacrifice (3 ratings) are all worth investigating

It's vital that you got some love for the jazz flute though

^ Hilarious scene! LOL

I'll make use of every suggestion made here. I'm a choosy person, but I'm sure there'll be stuff worthy of attracting my attention enough among the albums you're coming with.

Jazz flute can be cool. It is not imperative that I love an album in order to review it. If something is interesting enough, that might also suffice. Ying Yang

That makes us two!

I listened to Mark Shreeve's Phantom. I liked and hated it at the same time. Some parts having the sounds/melodies like birds are chirping were very interesting. That (pattern) repeated at least 3 times, as I remember, one was towards the end. But, some parts of the album were more like experimental, composition wise. Adding odd melodic variations is cool. But, they rarely make me say "wow". And this was not one of them. Plus, some sound choices were unsettlingly intense for me. Hey the name is Phantom. So why not being unsettling? Tongue I might consider listening to it again sometime. Who knows, perhaps it will grow on me.

Anyhow, I'll most probably review Terje Winther's Electronic Regions. And that will not take a month or so. Star

Early Mark Shreeve was only released on cassette, and I suppose I was surprised at stumbling over music of this high quality from guys like him and Ian Boddy, Paul Nagle, Cybe mm... on these home made/DIY looking releases. The things I've reccomended here are sometimes just "great for being so completely overlooked" rather than my favorite music. I really love the epic Dark Water, but the rest is a little patchy as far as I can remember.

Since metal seems to be your main area of interest, here are a few metal bands I can think of that all have either 1 or 0 reviews per album:

^ Thanks Mirakaze! Actually, metal is more of my main area of expertise than interest. I'm interested in any kind of music with very few exceptions. The "post" rock and metal outputs are among the ones that I'm least interested in. I love Atoma's Skylight album and a bunch of post rock albums. But hey, perhaps your recommendations can help me discover some further cool stuff in this area. I'll check them out.

I don't think of it as that obscure really, but this is an old one from 1972 that I added to the Prog Related category (I consider the album to be Prog but it's in PR as an artist discography issue primarily) about a year ago and it still has but one rating and no reviews: William Sheller's Lux Aeterna http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=72078" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=72078

Easy to find it all, but here's the first track as a taster. It's known by some for being hippity-hopped (sampled) for Deltron 3030 due to the phat groove :

Rateyourmusic tags it as

Genres:
Symphonic Prog
Psychedelic Rock, Classical Crossover

Descriptors:
orchestral, choral, epic, psychedelic

I had planned to review it at some time but likely won't now. Love to read your review if you do choose to listen to and review the album.

It seems really interesting. But, the hour is late here and I want to listen to it with my new speakers first, without disturbing the neighbours. I'm in an apartment here, so... I'll check it out in the morning or afternoon.

Les Fragments De La Nuit ( http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=49898" rel="nofollow - Musique du Crépuscule & http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=49899" rel="nofollow - Demain C'Etait Hier http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=49899" rel="nofollow - , both 0 ratings) I'm quite the fan of both the added albums from this neoclassical ensemble (+ debut album Musique de Nuit, like Bohren & the Club of Gore their discographies here aren't complete). I suppose their latter album is the reason they're added to to PA, but it's 95% a string quintet (with piano) but it's got some percussion, voices/wordless choirs. Quite complex compositions, but more melodic/romantic era (and cinematic) than your "typical" Avant/Rio-ensemble. Just listen to this incredible live performance...
Edit: Ok I had somewhat slightly forgotten how distinctly "chamber-rockin' they occasionally could be (studio version of the last live compostition - as a sextet with drummer):

Hi,

you might be interested in checking out the new CD 'Ocean of Colours' by my band Oxhole. You can listen to the full album on youtube or spotify (links below).

Oxhole is not on ProgArchives yet, I don't know if that's a problem for you. But it'd be a good fit I think, I'd like to see it added to the catalogue this year.

I'm more of a reader than a listener for quite some time and I prefer less demanding stuff serving as background music. I believe I'll write some reviews here but not as often as I originally planned.

I'll check your stuff out, like other suggestions. Thumbs Up

I have so much obscure stuff that I'm now looking for more well known stuff that I missed the first time around. It's weird that there's still stuff by bands like Camel, IQ, The Tangent, Pendragon, Focus, Canterbury and Italian stuff I haven't even heard yet because I focused too much on lesser known stuff.

^ I once became so exclusive about what I thought was good that I stopped listening to music all together and became fascinated with the amplified sounds of a beehive.

"Fairy Tales" by Mother Gong. Only 48 ratings and 8 reviews; that's pretty obscure to me.

OK. I feel enthusiastic again. Today I'll write a review, but not out of the suggestions here. Then, I'll get back to your suggestions/recommendations. I guess I'll alternate between the two.

I'm not really comfortable and eager so as to update here often, but I guess I can do that monthly or so.

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=75767" rel="nofollow - Ignea - The Sign of Faith (Instrumental)

This is the only full-length with zero ratings I can think of in the top of my head. I wouldn't exactly call Ignea obscure, however, they were only just added to the archives less than a month ago, so they don't have many reviews yet.

This is an instrumental edition of a full-length. Do what you will with that.

^ Thanks David! I have some other interests nowadays, unfortunately. But I'll check all the suggested bands/albums out here and will write reviews of some of them, if belatedly or in chaotic intervals. CoolEmbarrassed

Is there no appetite for someone with the knowledge and power to run a version of the "UnreviewedAlbums.asp" link that only covers Studio Albums rather than including the thousands of Singles, Live albums, compilations etc?

I'm sorry guys & gals for not keeping my promise. I have other interests and I mainly listen to other genres of music mostly, for months.

I guess I'll write some reviews out of your suggestions. Lewian's suggestion Rapoon is in my radar.

Yet, I'm waiting for a spark of motivation.

Again, I'm sorry.
