I am considering to puchase tthe most recent TMV release.  However, on amazon.com it appears that the epic track Cassandra Gemini has been separated into six smaller tarcks the comprise of a longer track.

Why do they do this?

The same happned with ELP's BSS remastereed US release, Karn Evil has been broken up into three impressions three seaprte track which hinders the general flow of the record, ths I had to get the imported copy of BSS.

 Is this album worth getting?

What difference does it make? If you play all the tracks in a row, there's no interruption of flow at all.

Just a note: The track listings you see most places are completely wrong. Cassandra Geminni comprises tracks 5-12 of the CD (the listing here on PA is correct).

If it's that big of a deal to you, though, the version of the song available on iTunes is just one big 31 minute track.

if they didnt split the tracks, technically it would be an EP with only 5 songs, but it would still be as long as an LP.

That's an explanation I've heard before and it's completely absurd. The difference between LP and EP isn't determined by the number of tracks on the album - if that were the case, then classic prog albums like Close to the Edge, Relayer, TFTO, Thick as a Brick, ITCOTCK, and so many more would be EP's, which obviously isn't the case. They divided the tracks that way to make it more digestible - they're split in places where it's easy to just jump into the song, which is nice if you don't have half an hour to spare. Listening to the piece in fragments doesn't do it justice, but just because it's split into seperate tracks doesn't mean you can't listen to the piece in its entirety (which is what I always do).

Wow - is TMV now the most overrated prog band in history?  LOL.   I have FTM and just don't like it, after repeated listens.  There's better stuff out there to spend your money on.  Good thing it was relatively cheap.  But, on a positive note it is better than my Supergrass CD I Should Coco

You know, just because you don't like it does not mean it is overrated. Everybody else likes it anyways.

Everybody else who listens to quality progressive rock music == listens to the Mars Volta as well, even if it's not one of their favorite modern bands.

go for it!

i guess a lot of people dont like Frances The Mute cause they dont understand the concept...
when you'll read the stories behind this album you're gonna love it more and more and more...
someday i read an article of TMV: they contacted Alejandro Jodorwosky to start the FTM film...
is that true or just a cruel lie?

^^^about the film, i have also heard rumors that omar is indeed producing a full-length music video, almost "The Wall" -esque for both "De-loused" and "Frances" . I think it would be an amazing production, especially considering I have strong conclusions about De-loused ( i know teh story well) and frances as well.

as to whether this is true or not...i can't say, we'll just have to wait and see...but if it is i'd say don't expect it until like 2007-2008 and possibly even '09 as sad as that sounds.

even if it's not done now, i feel that TMV is one of those bands that will do this or something similar to it in time.

btw i think but DO NOT quote me on this, that Omar produced "The Widow" video alongside of the director of the video, meaning we could expect the full-lengths to be similar in quality--and the video itself sure leads us to believe there is/was more with the beginning coming in out of nowhere and the end fading out and turning scope...

we'll see...

Frances the Mute is probably my favorite album of 2005!  It beats out Porcupine Tree's Deadwing by a long shot.  They are probably the most creative and ORIGINAL band out today!  If you dont own either of their two albums, buy them both NOW!  Omar's guitar playing is so unique and adds such a distinct sound.

Not everybody! I will admit that I've only listened to it once. I will give it a fair chance. But after that one listen, I don't see what all the fireworks are about. This it Prog???

Many will argue that it is. I'm not yet convinced. After onlly one listen, I'm not sure my opinion is of any value, but I must admit that after one listen, Pallas' The Dreams Of Men has blown me over. I'm still on the floor - It's THAT good.

It's a good thing we don't all like the same stuff, isnt' it? Otherwise this place would blow.
