Much to my surprise that NME outpost, the pop music section of Saturday Arts Supplement of the London Times, has a double page interview with Marillion today. Having praised their new album Somewhere Else, the writer Stephen Dalton, can't resist w**king off by having a bash at prog: .....quote.... 'This is largely because Marillion have - how can we put this kindly? - have an image problem. Their music is still perceived as bloated, bombastic, mullet-haired prog-rock, even by people who haven't heard it. In fairness, they did release an album called Script For a Jester's Tear. But, come on, we all had bad hair days in the 1980's'. Why does this style of (unoriginal) mainstream music "writing" still persist? So he thought the new album was great... Well, frankly, to me it sounded like they were sleeping when they recorded it. I have to say that the new album is not very good. I do not understand where all the 'positive' reviews are coming from. It is a very medicore 'pop' album. It has nothing to hold on to at all. The vocals are the worst that 'H' has produced and the lyrics are dire. On the good side the bass and drums are very good and Rothery does produce some good riffs. But overall, not a good album and a definite step backwards from Marbles  |

It wasn't my favourite Marillion album either (I liked some of it though), but I am so glad they got in the charts with it and got mostly positive reviews. The ultimate 'two finger salute' to the youth/credibility obsessed music industry.
Really, I expect nothing more out of some of those writers. And I have a few Marillion DVDs/VHS from 80s concerts and I can't recall any member having a mullet!! NME, and the like are without question the poorest music writers around. It's not even that they sl*g off prog, there is just too little focus on the music and too much painful self adulation with the writers showing off how clever they are while justifying the bands they like as being 'the saviours of rock and roll'.
 This has been everyone from Oasis to The Strokes to The Libertines to Kasabian to The Horrors...it changes every week!!However, I think the prog bashing has toned down slightly in the more open minded publications. Heck, in a recent Mojo special on album covers a writer said 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' had 'flashes of brilliance'!! First time I've ever read much positive about that in the press, and I love the album...

Yeah, fair's fair, I read the rest of the article and it was positive. The worst review of this was in the Independent- it said the band had now become a Rush tribute band! This shows that now only had the reviewer not played the Marillion album, he'd never played Rush either!! |

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What Stephen Dalton highlights are musical parallels in his article: Quote: "The band have released their 14th album, Somewhere Else, which is really rather good. I've only heard 'The Other Half'. Doesn't sound too interesting; nice, but nothing in comparision to 'Marbles'. But I think too, that the new Marillion are better. The Fish-Marillion sometimes seem kind of too neoproggy to me...though I like Misplaced Childhood. Now this is only my own opinion, and so I completely understand S. BTW, Dick, that bit you highlighted- 'shimmer like Coldplay, ache like Radiohead...' etc just seems to be piloted in, more or less, from the sections from other reviews of the album on the front page of Marillion's website! I don't know if this guy has played it either, then...

The new album really is a grower. I felt the same way when I first heard it, but 6 or so listens on and I'm really liking it.
I think this is why some listeners may be disappointed. It really isn't like Marbles, save maybe the title track. The band did say that they were going to go in a completely different direction, though and they did. As for the real topic at hand, I think this is a perfect example of why I don't often bother with the mainstream media anymore, too many lies and distortions. I find it extremely distressing that such media heavily influences people's opinions. I'm glad that Marillion are getting some good reviews, though. Perhaps more people will be encouraged to explore their wonderful music. -------------

One wonders what would've happened if they brought back Dave Meegan and they produced a disc comparable to the sound of Marbles. Everyone would be accusing them of copping out. Even a sub par Marillion album is better than a lot of the schlock that's out there...and this is FAR from sub par. I liked it when I first heard it, but it really is grabbing a hold of me the more and more I listen to it. That title track is friggin' amazing, too. E -------------
