Good news, Max! I hope it will inspire us to write more reviews, but I would suggest - instead of having a flood  of YES or GENESIS short and unsubstantiated reviews coming up - to put a special weight on reviews of those albums that were so far not reviewed at all or that have only a few reviews. It would help to balance the content of the site, IMO...

Posted By: Windhawk
Date Posted: November 27 2008 at 15:19
I would suggest that if not now but perhaps in the future (if this goes on) that some select prizes will go towards one of the people submitting first reviews only.

A possible idea - for the far future I guess - would be to have a special prize to go to reviews of non-western artists (i.e. reviews of acts from eastern europe, asia, middle east, africa, south america).

I prefer not limiting winner only to first review of album, maybe later I can give more weight to them.... but not now !

An easy one would be to have only reviews from the past 2 years ? Please discuss this.

To be honest, I don't have the kind of money to be acquiring new albums all the time (I'm still working on obtaining classic albums also).

On top of that, I've noticed that Kansas's albums get far less attention than Porcupine Tree's recent work, for instance (Fear of a Blank Planet - 132 reviews, Leftoverture -74 reviews).  So I don't really suppose it's fair to reward reviewers simply because they are about more recent albums.  Plus, there are many old albums with only a few or no reviews.

But I do spent quite a bit of time writing my reviews, and I put a lot of thought into them.  I give a track by track analysis of every record.  So when I get around to writing one about "Close to the Edge" or "Thick as a Brick," I'll put just as much thought into those.

Just a random thought...is it possible to put weight based on the number of words, instead of number of reviews?

That way, whatever album someone chooses to review, you put more weight on the more thoughtful reviews?  Not that I've been a big reviewer on the site (something I'm hoping to change in the near future), but, it does seem to me that those who put in the time to write a 500 word review deserve more of a chance than someone who puts in a 50 word review.

In a near future you'll see a new system that will also consider the appreciation of readers. So the weight will be based on the appreciation also.

What do you think of that ?

I think it's more objective that the number of words.... a nice idea though !

I like the idea, especially since my reviews tend to be long- the only pitfall, though, is that many words don't always mean more thoughtful, unfortunately.

I've read Moby DickWink

LOL...so have I.  Point taken.

I like the idea of reader appreciation.  I think that may be the way to go.  But first won't we need a system for rating the reviews? Like they have at Amazon (or is it CD Universe?).

Disapprove

I can't say I'd like a rating system for reviews. It hate to see my hard work and my opinion being dragged through the mud because I have a discerning dissenting view or just because fanboys would rate it badly based on everything but the quality of the review.

EDIT: Freudian slip or just mistake? LOL

I got reamed for giving In the Court of the Crimson King three stars- I was further advised that I should not be writing reviews.  Confused

What if the winner ah................  never mind I forgot that I`m living in the future. Anyone out there get a PM from a fictional website asking for reviews?
Now, and I`ve mentioned this before,  I don`t know if this has happened to anyone else out there but a lot of my crappy reviews have been stolen from other websites and I`ve even seen snippets of some of them on youtube. The same thing has happened with bits and pieces of some of the band bios I`ve written here. Personally, I write reviews and these bios for the fun of it when I have time or sometimes because I just want to spread the good word. One thing I`ve also noticed is that  a lot of the reviews I`ve read here are far superior to most of these so-called professional reviews because they are more informed. That`s it. I have to catch the next  time machine back to the mid sixteenth century. Wink

they're not 'Judged' and the prizes given to the 'best', it's a random drawing (as I understand)

Now I`m even more confused. If they`re not judged how can a decision be rendered? You`re saying after they`re not judged a prize is given at random to the best ???? Sounds like a Python sketch.

No. Pretend every review is a small piece of paper with the writer's name on it. Those are put into a giant hat and they draw one of them. It's not at all based on "which review is better"

Exactly. That's also why M@X wrote: the more you review, the bigger your chances, Ian. Well, he didn't at 'Ian' at the end, but apart from that.... Wink

Let's make sure however that this doesn't turn into a quantity over quality contest! Smile

So it`s a lottery of sorts. A raffle is a better way to describe it with the reviews being the the raffle tickets. How is this done then ? Does Max write all the reviews on little pieces of paper.......just kidding. But how is it done just out of interest ?

How would you  be able to do any sort of review if you were indeed dead whether it be good or bad? I write my reviews by memory. I wrote a Strawbs review this afternoon with  Twisted Sister blasting. I don't know what I'll write now. Whatever I pick out of my collection at random. Yes it will be a random review I think.

Good to see  this contest (or lottery, if you will) up and running!

I like the idea of reviews being judged by their content, but it seems a fairly subjective thing.  My favorite reviews that I've read here are usually the ones that make me laugh.  In the strict sense, they are not really always helpful to me in describing the music and the album itself, but I find purely analytical reviews to be dull and not worth reading.  Of course, that's just me.  I could easily see that 50 words is not enough to make a decent review.  As to other people rating our reviews..........I'm not sure that is a great idea either.  I've read some really good 1 star reviews, but I fear that fans of the artist in question may not appreciate them and therefore give the writer many negative votes (a certain prog metal band, who shall remain nameless, comes to mind here).

No, I think the raffle idea is the best one, since it gives everyone an equal chance without relying on subjective criteria.  Still, I do hope people try to write decent reviews and not just go for quantity.  I know I won't do that.

Can we know which review of their won? ConfusedWink

Hi. It seems like I have won something here. Would you be kind enough to PM or email me with the logon details for that download ?

I am delighted to win something........... but I would very much like to point out that I am a winner everytime I fall in love with a progressive rock album. Either that album was released in 1967 or this year.

Please PM me.

Yeah, but then again - imagine those tunes without the keyboards - or the drums. As I regard both their albums, all instruments are integral parts of the moods created - and the stark contrasts are what's creating those great atmospheres :-)
