Both classic progressive rock songs from classic progressive rock bands...that both beautifully close their classic albums. Both clocking in at around the same time almost (10+ min.) and with Bruford on drums Shocked I feel these two songs could match up pretty evenly. Both with a slow, soothing vocal part... and  head spinning instrumentals.

Let's have a clean fight!

In general I prefer YES but THIS KC's Masterpiece is much better for me than any Yessong.

Starless wins it for me by several country miles. It manages to negotiate wistful, poignant, plaintive, symphonic, jazzy, bombastic, visceral, creepy, joyous, maudlin and all points in-between seamlessly and effortlessly.

Oh, no fair! Two exceptional tracks.

I'm tempted to state no preference, but I will (just) plump for Starless, the greatest single piece of mellotron ever committed to vinyl.

ouch! two of bruford's greatest performances. I might go for starless since alan white didn't get around to ruin it. but, naah, no vote. two of my favourite pieces of music.

Heart of the Sunrise is one of the most perfect pieces of music ever created. Even something as amazing as Starless can't top it.

I really prefer Yes over King Crimson, but Heart of the Sunrise is not among my favourite Yes songs while I find Starless ecellent. However, I do prefer Starless live (for me, the main theme sounds as if it should be played by violin and not guitar).

I'm not a fan of King Crimson, but Starless is a masterpiece and with an excellent vocalist.

So Starless it is.

Yeaeehhehhgh.

These should be running neck and neck,  maybe some people will pump it up for Heart.  I did vote for Starless though.

I used to love "Heart of the Sunrise" even though it had twiddly bits that I disliked.  I didn't know "Starless" until many years later

Definitely "Starless". Easy choice for me.

Starless is often regarded as the peak of the 69-74 KC. By me for a start! Heart of the Sunrise is a classic piece off a classic Yes album. Could not do without either though - I will say that I prefer Yes concert versions (not over the studio track) but compared to KC live versions (all of which preceded the studio track. Both have atmospheric vocal sections... but the imagination in Starless' instrumental sections... monumental.

Really just trying to find a reason (excuse, pretext, no substance required) to vote gaianst a track to which I have always voted for...

can't do it really.

Starless.

^This.
But in the polls I've seen with Starless as one of two, I haven't seen it lose.
Time to put it up against Supper's Ready or Close To The Edge.

I absolutely adore both songs, but Heart of the Sunrise wins by the narrowest of margins.

As much as I love Starless, its last section lets it down. The build up preceding it is sensational, but it's just not the climax the song needs. Heart of the Sunrise is flawless straight through.

SHARP.

DISTANCE.

^ Try the live version from "The Collectible King Crimson Vol 1, disc 1", for me, that's the best version of the song, and the climax (unlike other live versions) is really strong.

Sorry but to me "starless"(the song) is over rated. If it wasn't for the title track(which I still admit is the best on the album)the album would not be praised as much as it is.

there's no such thing as "wrong' song or wrong band winning in a poll. Everyone votes for their favorite, that's all.

Heart of the Sunrise is one of my favorite Yes tunes and one of those prog songs that when I heard it just blew me away. (Much like Tarkus in that regard)

Starless is pretty cool but, for me, can't compete with Heart.

Heart of the Sunrise is awesome but Starless is much like a classic lament or a threnody that touches hearts and minds far beyond just the progfans. Its also one of my favourite pieces of music.

Both are great. This is obvious. HOWEVER... I think "Starless" is superior.

There can be only one...

"Starless," easily. In the past couple years, I've started to find "Heart of the Sunrise," as well as "South Side of the Sky" pretty tedious. They kill Fragile for me, a bit.

If Heart was being pitted against any other song I'd pick it, but Starless is my favorite in all of existence. (This is about the only occasion that I'd pick anything over Chris Squire's bass, but as you could get from my username, I got a favorite).

I like Starless. But based on the adulation I see from people on this forum, I think it is overrated. There are a LOT of tracks I prefer over Starless.

I like Heart of the Sunrise. But it isn't in my top 3 on Fragile.

But I do prefer Heart of the Sunrise over Starless.
