Yep i cant see what makes PoS so great...i mean they make ok songs and pretty standard prog metal stuff things that have been made a hundred times before.

They make oversentimental lyrics wich just gets silly, it seems they are written by a overdepressive teenage girl .

They does not seem to be original in any way, or atleast i have not heard any spinechilling moments by them. I would rate them ok but far from geniuses and they are miles away from the likes of mars volta wich can make original music sound just incredible.

As said before i can't really hear anything special about Pain of salvation and they really just sound like all the other prog metal bands ive heard before. And also they have pretty crappy guitarsound.

It's a really great album, but I suppose it's not for everyone.  I personally found his guitar tone to be SICK, in the good way...  songs like Rope Ends to be amazing...  and the thematic connections are just great.

Well, maybe being an Iron Maiden and Dream Theater fan yourself, the simple answer is that Pain of Salvation is way too complex for you and that's why you don't get it... stay with your easy tastes...

I never knew your name but I will miss you just the same
I was to live for you I lost the will to live at all the day you came
It'll never be the same but I will love you just the same
You were to be the first, how wonderful
Now I will always fear to hope again

Just to paste some of the OVER-depressing lyrics.

Yep it is in no doubt a good album but its not a fantastic masterpiece because it is just standard prog metal wich is just well put together and all the standard time signatures like forexample in undertow where you got a classic dream theater time signature. I just dont hear any originality in PoS music, thats what makes it boring. Whenever i hear undertow i hear a dream theater wannabe band mixed with nickelback singing

Complex PoS? Hardly...i would actually rate it a pretty easy album to get into. Just terribly boring. Frances the mute is a way more complex album than remedy lane will ever be.

Its rather the other way around i dont think PoS is complex enough and that makes it boring

O_o

Daniels singing style is far from being standard.

The rythm part in the music might be not as complicated as in Dream Theater, but they have so many elements mixed in their music, combined with good songwritinng.

dude............firstly Pain of Salvation rocks.............

second...

She can't stop pacing
She never felt so alive
Her thoughts are racing
Set on overdrive

It takes a village
This she knows is true
they're expecting her
And she's got work to do

He helplessly stands by
It's meaningless to try
As he rubs his red-rimmed eyes
He says I've never seen her get this bad

Even though she seems so high
He knows that she can't fly
and when she falls out of the sky
He'll be standing by

woooooow

I think you got dt and Pos mixed up man

I think a sad and true story like in delosued in the comatroium is much more well putt together without using so daft lyrics as these

"Oh baby i love you yea yea but now your dead ye ye"

Heh ok im overdoing it abit but it is pretty daft lovesong lyrics IMO.

I dont concider dream theater great lyric writers. But atleast better than PoS + they make better music Six degrees is just a masterpiece.

Pain Of Salvation's music is far more rhythmically complex and innovative than Dream Theater.  If you don't see this, it's possibly because it's also subtle and isn't full of lengthy, while simplistic, flashy solos.

Well perhaps they would have impressed me if they made a bit longer songs...but the songs are a bit short so they dont exactly get time to anything else but verse choros verse chorus (mid section with a new riff) verse again and/or perhaps ending chorus wich is repeted to all eternity,

Pretty standard song structure if you ask me?

Nope but that is concidered their masterpiece and i think if thats their grand masterpiece they are terribly overrated.

Anyway i think that a song like sign of the cross is more complex than forexample beyond the pale they have equal length but maiden seem to get so much more music and timechanges and stuff into their song.

Do you grasp polyrhythms?  The way the instruments interact all over Remedy Lane is monstrously good...  how many listens did you give this album, anyway?

Its a great album but its not a masterpiece ive have listened to the entire album about 5 times first to find out wich tracks are the most interesting and have listened to those tracks a couple of times.

Anyways i would not rate the album a fantastically complex thing as the "bad" tracks does not seem to improve on a listen or two. PoS always reminds me of nickelback and creed and as i like those bands i also like PoS alot and i like that they have put some more complexity to the songs and as well as keeping them melodical as nickelback and creed great stuff.

Anyways compared to forexample frances the mute the albums interest evaporates pretty quickly alot more complex and a incredible soundstructure on the tracks you can listen to a track countless times and still finding new elements with it. Frances the mute took a while to get used to as it alot more complex and groundbreaking in its genre than PoS will ever be.

The only thing that is a bit cool with PoS is that they have putten some jazzy influences in their metal songs wich is not very typical for a prog metal band. And as a great fan of mahuvishnu orchestra i love a bit of jazzy influences.

the beauty of PoS is how natural they make the complexity sound...they have so much stuff going on, stuff like chain sling, rope ends, fandango, etc...but they make it homogenous with their musical ideas, unlike dream theater, who i feel make complexity sound "clunky" and can't combine it with more normal songs. that's why you get extremely poppy songs from their like anna lee and i walk beside you, and even at their most complex they are less complex than PoS, in terms of comosition. the only thing they do better is "wank" or "choke their chickens".

Nah i think often dream theater is accused of w**king with their instruments because of their great talents. But listen to a song like six degrees of inner turbulence...just a great song without all the "w**king" you describe.

I think all great musicans will be accused of w**king but what is wrong with using your talents? Besides i dont find PoS music complex and although the transitions between timechanges flows quite nicely and smooth it is nothing compared to the masters of smooth timechanges Iron Maiden...

Thats what i love with maiden...just the fantastic smooth transitions in music but even they have to bend in the dust for the marvelous mars volta wich makes so great music than you can cry. NOW THAT IS A TRUE MASTERPIECE.

Exactly. DT hurl the complexity right at your face, PoS write intricate songs that take some time to get to know them in order to be fully appreciated.

Just to clarify that: believe me or not, it was in the third (and I think last ever) listen to that album that I realised they were TRYING to sing in Spanish. I thought it was some strange and ancient language until I started to recognise some words... the pronuntiation is just awful...

I guess it's simply a matter of taste. Maybe age has something to do with it, but I can't see what the fuss about The Mars Volta is about. For me half of Frances is just nonsense noise and the other half is crappy punk (or prog-punk it that makes you feel better).

On the other hand, I really like Pain of Salvation and I find their music complex, moving and very original (try to find a band with a similar sound...).

Anyway, let's focus in what we share: I like Iron Maiden and Dream Theater, although I find them overrated. You like Pain of Salvation, but find them overrated. So here's to music!

One Hour At The Concrete Lake is the album for you. Knowing only Remedy Lane tells you as much about PoS as knowing only Scenes From A Memory tells you about DT.

Blaze Bailey was a poor fit for Maiden.  His solo work is another story, I enjoy it, but no one can really be the vocalist for Iron Maiden but Dickenson...

And PoS IS a masterpiece band, you are a perfect example of the Peter Principle applied to music.

Saying that they're not complex in any way results in many members not taking you seriously anymore. It's your opinion though, you're entitled to have one as much as I am.

Ah im just saying the lyrics are so over sentimental that they sound more like a nickelback or creed song any other brainless songs. I have just heard so many " sad story" songs and i think it would have been a more approperiate way to hounour someone you love by making such silly lyrics. I know several bandmembers that have gone through a hard time and did not write such sentimental lyrics.

I hate sentimental lyrics about love thats exactly why i listen to prog

Besides i would rate forexample birds of fire for complex, a plague of lighthouse keepers complex or cassandra gemmini for complex...but i dont see in any means those terms of complexity in a PoS album.

PoS is definitely not standard "prog metal". For that, see: Power of Omens, Symphony X, Sieges Even... I'd name more but I've managed to forget most of it , with the generic neoclassical sections, power metal singing, some needless time changes shoved in (OK, Symphony X might have done it before the others, I don't know or really care). I've not heard a single band that resembles PoS that came before them.

Try: Atheist, Cynic, Spastic Ink, Watchtower (doubtful, except on occasions), ATM Project, Cause for Effect (not really, but sort of), or Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects then

What's with all the hate threads around here? i find it hard to grasp how some of you supposedly love progressive music, but hate some of the best progressive bands! is there some kind of unwritten rule stating that you're not allowed to love both PoS and DT? Personally, i absolutely love them both. I prefer PoS (I think the quality of their albums is much more consistent than DT, there's quite a few DT songs i skip when listening to their albums), however, i still rank DT extremely highly.

My advice is this: remove your heads from your arses, stop bitching about who's better, and just enjoy some brilliant music!

Blah its just tiring with all these guys that screams about how good a band really is. Whenever i try to recommend a band or something there is just these guys that say this band is crap and so on. It gets quite irritating after awhile with people just bashing the bands that i like...

And anyways when people that does not like prog metal they always go on bashin on dream theater that is very irritating also...there is alot bands that are worse that dream theater and i need to point that out for those who not listen to prog metal

You're bashing PoS, who many people like. I myself, though not a fan of most of their output, think that they are far superior to Dream Theater.

Blah well bashing britney spears on a prog forum is no problem and that is exactly like bashing colosseum on a britney spears forum. However i would like to pont out that PoS is not geniouses of music they will never be as great as bands like dream theater and mars volta wich has much more fans and are much more creative.

Yet these bands do not recive any bashin just because they are relatively unknown compared to TMV and Dream Theater and therefore everybody suddenly gets this crazy idea about PoS being better than those bands since they get bashed alot just because they are the most well known bands in the genre and PoS just gets the good words and that is pretty unfair if you ask me.

Not true. People have criticised them in the past on this forum. There's no "recieved opinion" here; EVERYBODY has their own tastes. Basically, you're getting worked up against no one in particular. You don't have to like PoS! Stick with DT and TMV if that's what you want to do. I would advise you, though, to start talking about some other bands here or people could get very tired of your presence. Ever thought about trying some Gentle Giant?

ConfusedFrances the mute is not complex, it's a big messy and pretentious cocktail of mostly unbearable tunes, especially the voice of the singer!LOL But the band has some good points, I mean they could become good one day, after they've learnt to create really good and high-quality music (and maybe after changing the vocalist, but I guess would be quite tough for them to find someone equivalent to Daniel Gildenlöw)!Wink

Just my opinion, okay you have yours. Everything's just a matter of taste. I really don't mind if some people prefer DT (I like as well, but not that much as PoS) or TMV.That's okay they should enjoy it. For me PoS is one of the best ProgMetal bands!

Complex PoS? Hardly...i would actually rate it a pretty easy album to get into. Just terribly boring. Frances the mute is a way more complex album than remedy lane will ever be.

Its rather the other way around i dont think PoS is complex enough and that makes it boring

maidenrulez: at some points you're saying that you're only bashing PoS because other people are bashing DT. at other times you're saying that PoS are crap and unoriginal.

i have to ask, can you honestly say you've sat down and listened to a PoS album properly? (and by properly, i mean with absolutely no preconceptions about them and without comparing them to anyone else). it seems like you're trying to compare the PoS albums to the DT and TMV albums, which is just stupid, because they are very, very different.

from what i've gathered reading your posts, you have an extremely narrow-minded perspective when it comes to music, which i wouldn't have expected on a progressive music forum. something i've learned is to always listen to a new album at least a few times before writing it off, and to listen to the album with an open mind. an example i can think of is my experiences with Opeth, i listened to "Blackwater Park" and completely hated it because of the growling in the vocals. however, when i found out that the album "Damnation" had no growling i decided to give them a second chance, and absolutely loved it. since then i've given "Blackwater Park" another try and after a few listens it's starting to become one of my most-played albums at the moment.

Open your ears, nicholas Actually, SOME riffs of Symphony X are almost identical, I give you that. But Symphony X are consistently more neo-classical and Power Metal oriented, and that's a quality DT only touched with ToT and some small portions of some of their tracks.

The Odyssey is somewhat similar to ToT, but not to any other DT album. And V: The New Mythology Suite and The Divine Wings Of Tragedy, which are the Symphony X key albums, are not like any DT album.

Edit: Except in some short passages, as I explained earlier.

Maiden:  There already appears to be an underlying hate around this forum surrounding Dream Theater.  By "bashing" POS predominantly because others bash DT just shows you up to be immature.

Maybe you should listen to more albums by POS rather than simply focusing your efforts on one.  I'm not the biggest fan of POS either, but I still intend to get quite a few of their albums before making my mind up completely.  It's possible to like both bands, you know.

And I see very little resemblences between Dream Theater and Symphony X.
