Anatrofobia biography
Anatrofobia, meaning Fear Of Ducks, was formed in Perosa Canavese, Italy in 1991, taking its name from an American comic strip. The core trio consisted of brothers Luca Cartolari (bass and electronics), Alessandro Cartolari (alto sax and elecotrnics) and Andrea Biondello (percussions) who experimented and improvised together. Their first album, Frammenti Di Durata, was released in 1997 through C.M.C. In 1998 Mario Simeoni (flute, sax) joined them and in 1999 they recorded their second album, Ruote Che Girano A Vuoto, followed by yet another lineup expansion and a 2001 release Uno Scoiattolo In Mezzo Ad Un Autostrada, which received wide acclaim and won the remio Darwin 2001 best Italian album of the year. Being hard at work, the band recorded and released in 2002 their fourth album, Le Cose Non Parlano, with the collaboration of lessio Pisani (bassoon), and Roberto Sassi (electric guitar). This album again received praises and came in second in the Premio Darwin 2002. In 2003 they recorded a track for the tribute album to King Crimson and also released another album, Tesa Musica Marginale, which was released in 2004. In 2005 and 2006 they contributed composition to two music collections: Suono Sonda 4 (the track L?ultimo Grande Statista) and BääFest: 1stand2ndyeardiary (the track Mi Prenderò Cura Di Te). In 2007 a change of direction came with Brevi Momenti Di Presenza, in which they shifted from fusion to focus more on electronic and free improv approach.

3 stars Anatrofobia are an Italian RIO/experimental progressive rock band from Italy, who between 1997 and 2007 released 6 studio albums. At the time there was a core of brothers Luca Cartolari (bass and electronics), Alessandro Cartolari (alto sax and elecotrnics) and Andrea Biondello (percussion). Some 13 years on from their last full-length the album, are back with their next. Only Luca Cartolari (bass, e-bow, effects, computer) and Andrea Biondello (drums) are still there, and they have been joined by Cristina Trotto Gatta from Masche (voice, melodica) and Paolo Cantù (guitar, clarinet, effects, loops, electronics). Cantù is a well-known guitarist in the experimental scene, playing in bands such as Makhno, Tasaday Afterhours, Six Minute War Madness, A Short Apnea, Four Gardens in One, End of Summer, Damo Suzuki's Network, and others. Anyone who is heavily involved with any member of Can is always going to have an interesting approach to music, and such is the case here.

The band have historically been an instrumental act, but now they have a singer, yet her approach (which may actually be just reading the words although she does sing as well) fits in well with what is an incredibly experimental and interesting outfit. There is a feeling of a large amount of improvisation on the album, although some pieces are obviously structured quite deliberately. But while there may be beautifully delicate fretless bass, that could be pitted against strange electronic noises and jagged sounds which both brings all the elements together yet also deliberately alienates them. Often one has no idea where the music is going, but then one does wonder if the band does either, yet somehow it always comes to a logical conclusion. Delicate yet strong, this is left field music for those who enjoy musicians who continue to push boundaries and do something quite different. Anatrofobia were originally formed nearly 30 years ago and it will be interesting to see if we have to wait another 13 years for the next one as this is both solid and incredibly interesting.

Anatrofobia RIO/Avant-Prog

Review by toroddfuglesteg

3 stars Another interesting RIO/Avant Garde band from Italy which has been flying under our radar for some years. I believe they have released six albums, but has now split up, I believe. Which is a shame.

This is their third or fourth album. Their music is based on pulsating rhythms with woodwinds doing most of the melodies, helped by some electric guitars as guest instruments. They do not use any vocals. References are Yugen and Nichelodeon. Both those bands are from Italy too and I smell a trend here.

The music on this album is not bad at all. It has it's qualities. There is nothing here that excite me though. But nothing here is offensive or sleep inducing either. Neither is there any strong melodies or fascinating structures. This is a good avant-garde album and nothing more than that. I guess fans of Italian RIO must check out this album.

Good, but not essential or great music.
