Sven Grünberg biography
Sven Grünberg was born in Tallinn, Estonia, in 1956. Still at his teens, being a pupil in Tallinn musical school, he founded his first band Mess. In Mess he was composer, singer and keyboards player. Their music became popular between students, mostly because of its colourful ,artsy sound. Despite the years of the band's existence and many live performances, Mess did not release a single studio album because of the contradictions of their musical style with the Soviet ideology; only in 1996 did Grünberg released a compilation from several survived Mess recordings and a full re-mastered album in 2004.

At that time he met engineer Härmo Härm, who experimented with construction of electronic sound devices. Using of these advanced (for that time) electronic instruments gave to Sven wider possibility for realisation of his musical ideas.
From 1979 Sven works as professional composer, became a member of Estonian Cinematographic Society. During his career he composed music for more than hundred movies. From mid-80-s he started experimenting with ambient, cosmic electronics sound. Whenever his another interest was Tibetan Buddhism, he included some elements of Eastern musical culture ( as meditative forms) in his compositions.

He released few solo albums in a field of early experimental electronics, but they had only limited success ( partially because of negative reaction of that-time Soviet regime officials).Later Sven concentrated more on writing music for films. Grünberg is also the Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Institute of Buddhism.

3 stars "Hingus" ( "Breath") is debut solo album by Estonian composer and electronic musician. Recorded using first synthesizers and some unique electronic devices, constructed by his friend Härmo Härm.

Music there is interesting example of early analog electronics( think about Klaus Schulze). Before recording this album, Sven played in school band Mess (quite popular in Estonia in its time). But his interest to composing and advanced electronic music bring him to solo recordings.

Instrumental compositions on this album sound as spacey ambient, almost rhythm less, but with some melodic tunes you can hear. Early Sven interest to Buddhism is influenced music in way of meditative atmosphere of this recording as well. Sound itself is vintage, but the album was recorded in 1981, and in fact is one of very first electronic music works in former SU.

Whenever this album is possibly mostly of electronic music researchers interest, music sounds surprisingly attractive even for unprepared listener. Very rare release, though. Happily was re-released on CD in 2000, but on Russian label Boheme music only ( anyway, it means you can get it if you will try hard).

About 3,5.
