Red Balune biography
A short-lived experimental / avantgarde rock duo named RED BALUNE were founded by Geoff LEIGH (saxophone, flute; ex-HENRY COW) and Cathy WILLIAMS (keyboards, voices) in March 1976, after Radar Favourites (an experimental / jazz combo also featuring Charles HAYWARD) disbanded. The challenging pair had fed themselves up on a number of session musicians (including a percussionist Robin MUSGROVE or a bassist / guitarist Colin MCLURE ... it's said they had once grown up to be a small orchestral formation) for a few years.

In December 1977 RED BALUNE went on a tour for the Netherlands and in the following month they recorded some material for their debut album, that had not been finished sadly. The material has been released as a single "Capitalist Kid c/w Spider In Love" in 1978 via their own label MCCB Records. In early 1979, in collaboration with fragments of HENRY COW - Fred FRITH (guitar, violin), Tim HODGKINSON (keyboards, alto saxophone, clarinet), Chris CUTLER (piano, keyboards) - and the founder of AKSAK MABOUL Marc HOLLANDER (bass clarinet), they recorded an EP titled "Maximum Penalty" and released in the same year via MCCB.

2 stars What a powerful noisy bizarre created by one of RIO / Avant legends. As everyone knows, RED BALUNE existed as one of Avantgarde Progressive pioneers, where a couple of members founded some Avant offshoots later and solidified RIO / Avant Prog scene. This single creation including two eccentric noisy stuffs can be called as one of kickoffs in the massive world. Quite interesting was that the vanguard got started with such a weird, creepy production. Look at the sleeve and you will get horrified at an abstract painting explaining three weak prayers kneeling upon the ground for a computer or a display or a television. This eerie atmosphere should let us anticipate a drastic and dreadful breakdown in the progressive rock scene. Suppose they would give the audience kinda prescription for our brainstorming. An interesting explosion but I cannot recommend this single for a progressive rock freak with a fantastic expectation. On the contrary, let me recommend for an innovative one who gets concerned about the future of the progressive rock scene.

Review by progadicto

4 stars No? Really? No one comment this record before? I'm still surprised. With two or three members of remarkable RIO bands in this record, this EP is one fine and ejoyable record.

Every song of that album is a delicious mix of many genres. You'll hear blues, hard rock, crimsonian sounds, hard "magma" vocals, many avant garde, the most obscure passages of RIO (with "Capitalist Kid") and some good attempts of dark impovisations along the almost 24 minutes of this record.

The RIO/Avant Garde reviewers had a debt with this wonderful and unique attempt of blowminding music. At least 4*.

Thanks to DamoXt7942 for the artist addition.
