Topic: 18 ridiculous prog album covers Posted: April 26 2008 at 19:19 |
When I pull out the "In The Court of The Crimson King" CD my wife always tells me to keep that thing away from her, lol. The Jethro Tull cover is great, as is Script For A Jester's Tear.

I have no idea why Kate chose oriental imagery and font for the cover |
Maybe it's just got something to do with kites being a stereotypically Oriental thing.

I know that this is going to tick some or all people off here but, isn`t prog itself ridiculous ? I`ve been listening to progrock since I was a kid back in the early seventies and ever since I`ve had to put up with ribbing from everyone from my friends at high school to my wife`s classical musician friends. Nonetheless, the one on the guy`s list I really have to disagree with is the Script For A Jester`s Tear cover. All the Fish era covers in my opinion are great.

We all know prog has its ridiculous aspects. Just think of ELP prancing around in Montreal's Olympic stadium in their "Fanfare" days; or think of Jon Anderson AND Steve Howe wearing embroidered silk pyjamas to perform "Turn of the Century". Oops. almost forgot that (female!) kimono Chris Squire sported for the "Hold out your hand" video.

For me, these are the main ones (in the world of prog of course):
- "Love Beach" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
- "Rhapsodies" by Rick Wakeman
- "Genesis" by Genesis

Now that would make a great prog cover: hateful critics, classical & jazz purists, all sitting in an english garden , waiting for the sun , sipping green tea and moldy crumpets with deaf dogs running idly after the Hare with the spectacles

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Where I live (at least), the AV Club exists in the back of the Onion, and the issue this article came out in also has a fun Mars Volta interview, so I've held onto it. However, the lineup was a little different, and...thinner...

funny, 12 of those are probably some of my fav album covers (including RUSH's hemisphers in my top ten)
I don't think a lot of those are lame at all, I rarely find something someone would consider "weird" or "lame" as something "weird" or "Lame" I might not agree with it, but I do enjoy it. Much the same as most prog, lyrics included, I hardly ever agree with many of the messages that prog artists are trying to convey, but I still thuroughly enjoy the format, and context that they bring it forth.

I think they are all very ridiculous, except for De-Loused In The Comatorium, which is weird, but not quite as over the top as the other albums.

I thought this was one of the funniest articles I've read in a while.
We have to remember YMMV. Come to think of it; everyone's mileage varies.

the Marillion cover is laying it on a bit thickly, I think, so I agree with the ridiculousness there. generally speaking one could reasonably claim "any cover that shows anything but the musicians is ridiculous". but then covers surely become boring after a while, so I prefer a bit of ridiculousness

Someone who thinks they are GOD out there keeps hiding my posts. But my response to this thread is c`mon guys isn`t prog ridiculous to begin with. Critics hate it, classical and jazz purists hate it and even my dogs hate it. I happen to love the real prog from `68-76. The only one cover I disagree with on the guy`s list is the Marillion cover. There, please don`t hide this post. It`s only my opinion.

have a look at the cover of Guru Guru's "Känguru" (front and back). now that's what I call a ridiculous cover (in case you don't know the back cover: it shows drummer Mani Neumeier in a kind of kangaroo costume - without head - hopping around)
