Hell yeah! 12:5 is an AMAZING CD, which just happens to be live, and if
it weren't for oocasional cheering from the fans, you'd swear it was
studio-recorded. If you've ever doubted Pain of Salvation's talent and
just dismissed them as just another prog-metal band, well, this album
alone will change your mind IMMEDIATELY. Beautiful acoustic versions of
studio recordings, this CD makes for a sublime listen every time!

My vote goes to Yessongs. One of the true live masterpieces. My second place is Welcome Back My Friends...

Yes: Yessongs.
Not as good as Dream Theater's "Live At Budokan" in my opinion though.

I've always been a big fan of live albums, but it was still a bit of a shock realising I own all the above .
How can I possibly choose between The Allman Brothers "Filmore East", Mahavuishnu's "From Nothingness To Eternity" and ELP's "WBMFTTSTNE"? On balance, taking only prog into account, and from the list shown, I'd have to go for ELP, if for no other reason than the incendiary version of Tarkus, which has one of my favorite ever climaxes to a live track.

Is Jackson Brownes' Running On Empty, strictly a live album - thought several tracks were recorded in hotel rooms sans audience?
And I would too go with Zappa's Helsinki Concert double as my favourite Zappa live.

Not many new records in this list...
A band which just had two studio albums released had the guts to make a marvelous live recording is Magenta. Another Time Another Place ('04) is a double live album what catches their sound very exctremely well. Splendid produced and live no overdubs etc.etc.. From a grotesque opus on keyboards, excellent guitar playing a fine rhythm section to that golden voice of Christina.
Surprisingly I see no Pink Floyd in this thread... Or do we think that their live records are not live enough? Or are we waiting on the official release of PULSE?

It has to be YESSONGS a masterpiece of tight live musicianship. Also a lot of the live versions on this album better the studio recordings, which for me is always the sign of a very good band!!

Okay, I know this is prog rock website, and so I understand why most of these albums are here to choose from (and I would vote for "Seconds Out" as my #1).
BUT if you're going to include Hendrix, The Who, and the freakin' Allman Bros., you absolutely must include Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same," which is a fantastic live album: it's versions of "Dazed & Confused," "No Quarter" and "Stairway" are live masterpieces. (BTW: The Page/Plant No Quarter Live Album (first release) is a very good rock live album as well, as I'm sure some of you know).
I can't believe this string is on it's second page and no one has brought this up! I feel very isolated in my Zep fanaticism.
Oh, and I know some are going to say "How the West Was Won" is better, but I'm aware of the album and, no, it's not better.

As bluetailfly rightly said: It's a shame that Led Zep are not in the
list. But I would argue with bluetailfly about "The Song Remains The
Same" and "How The West Was Won": IMHO the latter is the better. TSRTS
has too many disappointing moments wheras HTWWW is am masterpiece of
hard rock (NOOOOOO, LED ZEP ARE NOT HEAVY METAL!!!) caught live. BTW:
Does anybody really need live albums??

My father actually attended that Zappa concert that RichardW and Dick Heath mentioned, "You can't do that on stage anymore vol.2". Must have been great .
Anyway from that list my fav is Yessongs.

I think my fave would be "Peter Gabriel Plays Live". Of the prog live albums the poll list could include also Gentle Giant's Playing The Fool, Kansas' Two For The Show and Renaissance at Carnegie Hall, and Seconds Out as mentioned. And why not also Rush's Exit... Stage Left. Kinda strange list to exist on a prog site, IMHO. Let's say Yesshows if I SHOULD pick one of them.
