behind what?.. the ones you have in front...  Rush?.. VDGG?? Phish???..  oh no..

let me put in to you this way.. .you will find Tarkus in many more discussions about important pieces of prog music.. then any of those 3 combined.

my two cents..  it's your list...Wink

the top ten one was me, but the original list in the first post is not. i personally dont like ELP as the other classic prog bands, yet Tarkus will still make it to 11 for me.

i also think there shouldve been some more fusion bands, or Italian prog like PFM or Area.

I see... was just quoting your 10 though...

just re-title it from 'most important' to .'favorites'. Wink  No way that that Tarkus isn't right with CttE.   See .. you will  find it in texts devoted to prog.. mentioned in the same breath for importance, infuence, and the development of prog and will not find Rush, VDGG, or frickin Phish mentioned anywhere with them.

the "importance" i think is how important the songs were to the development and progression of prog rock as a whole.

Also, other than the first 10 songs or so, i cant truly agree on the selections. I notice no one else has really complained about the top 10.

if i could, (cause i agree with it) my top ten would be tweaked...

1. King Crimson – “21st Century Schizoid Man”

2. YES – “Close To the Edge”

3. Miles Davis – “Pharaoh’s Dance” or "Shh...Peaceful"

4. Jethro Tull – “Thick As A Brick”

5. Pink Floyd – “Echoes”

6. Genesis – “A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers

7. The Beatles – “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)

8. Frank Zappa – “Peaches En Regalia”

9. Rush - "2112"

10. Phish – “You Enjoy Myself”

honestly.. no ELP.. no credibility.. unless this is a list of your favorites...  Tarkus... not in the top 5.  Sort of makes it look silly.

well we can always swap out Gregory Peccary for Tarkus LOL

Worst attempt I've ever seen, and far to much american stuff. These are the only tracks from the list I would have considered including:

1. King Crimson – “21st Century Schizoid Man”

2. YES – “Close To the Edge”

4. Jethro Tull – “Thick As A Brick”

5. Pink Floyd – “Echoes”

8. Frank Zappa – “Peaches En Regalia”

31. Genesis – “The Musical Box”

1. KC - 21st Century Schizoid Man
2. Yes - Ctte
3. ELP- Tarkus
4. Pink Floyd - Saucerful of Secrets
5. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells

discuss or flame behind my back LOL

Reminds me that I need to get some early Floyd. And some rocks. And some music knowledge

I'd have thought of Moonchild's crossing of improv and rehearsed moments in a non-musical (image-based) fashion was pretty significant as well. Close To The Edge seems a reasonable water-mark, but I'd have thought that, say, Roundabout was as influential/important, and took place a year earlier. Tarkus and Schizoid Man seem fair enough, even if Camel are more popular. Tubular Bells is a ballsy pick. Why?

My dog Lucy and me are presently working hard on a new ''important ''list, at least very important to us.. We'll keep you postedTongueNext?

Bless Lucy!Big%20smile As JJ Rousseau so correctly stated "the more I analyze the human race, the more I love my dog" . Woofs have more taste than humans because they all show their real emotions, all the time . I , for one, eagerly await  this list with a wag of the tail we all once had a million years ago LOL
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

easy.. so easy...  I don't even type to explain myself.. someone already has..  which explains why it is so high up hahhaha

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubular_Bells

Roundabout would be in 2nd 5 .. along with some.. that may not be so clear.. some non-english..  but still thinking on the next 5.  But have two German entries.. sharp minds might figure those out by the time I post it.

Ah, fair enough. Thinking German:

Would we have Phaedra?

I don't know my TD that well, but they'd definitely seem right.

The other one, some sort of Kraftwerk, but I'm not sure what...

Edit: And brilliant sig LOL

love it LOL.... the avatar will never change .. but the sigs I like to rotate occasionally.

no TD..  both I think are  a bit of a no brainer.. one though...if people cared enough to get in arms over a stupid list... they probably would be.  It doesn't fit what many see as ..err.. prog.  LOL

Now, you see, the problem is. I don't have enough music. I must become poorer.

hahhaha.. that is universal truth for those new to or just exploring prog past the same old same old big groups....... .the old farts here have had years to accumulate this stuff.  I knew all the English 'classic' stuff since I was a kid... but of course what really grabbed me was the 'continental' stuff that, in the days before the internet and PA's.. I never had been exposed to.  Plus for many years I was not heavy into prog.. but was a fiend for the Blues and the musical trends of the day.. new wave, hair metal, grunge alt-rock.

I would put Jethro Tull's "Baker St. Muse", Gentle Giant's "Three Friends" and EL&P's "Pirates", not particularly for my own taste, but for how innovative they were at the time.

Interstellar Overdrive is probably a lot more important than both Saucerful and Echoes. It might even be more important than that Umphrey’s McGee track at 44!

Yeah I agree, "In The Court of The Crimson King" should be on the list along with Nektar's "Recycled" or "Remember The Future"
"The Box. You opened it. We came."

Is "Roundabout" the first prog song (i.e., not a pop song by a prog artist, but a prog song with prog elements that were not edited out) that was made into a pop single?

Lucky Man (ELP, 1970). Released as a single in the US, if I'm right. That moog solo was distinctly prog, and the drumming isn't exactly pop, either.

I suppose you have Cat Food as well (King Crimson, 1969/1970 can't remember which), but that's more bizarre jazz than pure prog, I'd have thought.

Just a couple of examples. I'm fairly sure Nights In White Satin was also a single, but then, it's questionable whether the Moodies were prog, and whether having a mellotron involved automatically makes something prog.

So, I wouldn't have thought so.
