Nursery Cryme isn't in the same league as ITCOTCK IMO though "Musical Box" along with "The Fountain Of Salmicus" are excellent but the rest of the album...

Peter gives a far better emotional performance for me. Gets me every time the end. Goosebumps. Also Musical Box is better song.

Well, I think Epitaph could have been sung by another great vocalist, whereas The Musical Box really leans on Gabriel's distinctive approach. Still I must admit I like both songs and performances equally with the full appriciation.

Epitaph is one of my favourite vocal performances in prog, and one of the most emotive ones. On the other side Gabriel is still among my least liked vocalists on prog. And even though Musical Box is one of the songs sung by Gabriel that I enjoy the most... still Epitaph wins for me by far.

I actually voted for King Crimson - rare because I really don't like much of what the band did.

However, Epitaph is a wonderful piece of music and Lake's vocals are excellent, as they usually are. Gabriel's vocals on The Musical Box are also pretty amazing.

Point of embarrassment: in our pub quiz league, we always get 10 people to identify as the last round. Who couldn't identify Peter Gabriel, then?? Yep, me!

"The Musical Box" is the epitome of musical drama. One of the most moving performances ever done by a singer in rock music. The vocals on "Epitaph" are excellent too, but that's a more conventional kind of excellence.

Epitaph easily for me.  Good as Musical Box is, I don't think the vocals are all that great.  It's the instrumental tension that makes the song.  Epitaph, on the other hand, is owned by Greg Lake's vocal.  Stunning performance.

Epitaph vocals are not so great IMO, a bit lack of emotion despite the excellent range of Greg.

On the other hand, The Musical Box vocals are MAGIC.they transport you to another world where anything is possible, the dramatic changes are brutal, and that's perfect for me..

The emotional charge in the final section vocals is amazing, nobody ever has reached that level of communication between singer and audience.

I still believe Greg has a better range, but peter is a better vocalist and Musical Box is his peak

I love them both, but Nursery Cryme was, to me, the epitome of what early Genesis and, indeed, prog from that period was all about.

When I first heard Musical box, I was like "What the hell is going on?" on that final charge (and I must say, not in the good sense)... however I've grown used to it and it doesn't bother me one bit anymore. Still, I wouldn't say it's among my favourite vocal perfomances by any stretch of imagination.

Between these two songs, Epitaph, but from the same album as The Musical Box, I'd have an easier time comparing Seven Stones to that particular KC song and in that case it may even have a slightly better vocal performance, though all excellent.
