Hmmm... not so sure Snow Dog... lemmie think, what could be Snow Dog's favourite band? I bet it's an Anthem type band and I'll think of it as Best I Can and look Beneath, Between and Behind or By Tor, and Snow Dog, perhaps even I'll Fly By Night to Make Memories of Rivendell In The End...

The best of the Fish era albums. Seriously. The album that made me think, hey...maybe Marilllion are not so bad. Then came Season's End. You know how I feel about thjat.

Clutching at Straws - Marillion. Not terrible by any stretch, but leagues below all the albums that preceded it, imo.
Big Generator - Yes. Same as above. I generally don't have a problem with Rabin era Yes, but BG is not a patch on 90125.
Born Again - Black Sabbath. After the glorious two albums which Dio fronted, BA sounds slapdash and comical in comparison.
Anything by Rush, post Counterparts - Geddys voice got progressively better over the years, but I think their songwriting has been uninspired. A few little gems in there, but I've not heard anything since 1993 that confirms for me why this band is one of my favourites.
Zones - Hawkwind. Purchased at a time when I thought the Hawks could do no wrong. I had only heard their 'consistent' albums. I was very disappointed by the ad hoc, mish mash of badly performed, badly produced half baked ideas, that was Zones.

Talking of bands I really love (which to me means my top 5 or so bands), and there are few albums. VDGG - A Grounding In Numbers Soft Machine - Land Of Cockayne Magma - Merci And even of those...Merci has some good moments. Also, I didn't expect Merci or LOC to be good but with AGIN I did with all the positive reviews.

This Strange Engine is one of my desert island discs which I love from start to finish and I've never been able to understand the negative response to this album by a lot of people. Radation on the other hand contains about 15 minutes of worthwhile music and the remainder is just filler.

Must be about 10 years since I listened to The Strange Engine put perhaps I will dig it and give it another go.

Noctourniquet is brilliant. Though i do miss Omar's masterful guitar playing, but it's fine. The compositions, thought not entirely made by him, are still great. Plus the focus on in-the-pocket drums and keys are a major success. |
I really want to like this since i'm gonna see them live in a month!!

Well since I saw them on the tour in Sept, I appreciate Bridges/Sky a lot more now, I did not get Breaking All Illusions.....and I did not like Outcry live, its a boring song......It just drones on and on.

Oh, definitely! When Portnoy left I was expecting them to move to new and bold directions (even though I basically love almost every album they have released so far), when, actually, they moved backwards and mysteriously decided that all of the sudden LaBrie was a good enough composer to contribute with the band when all of his solo albums are as good as being kicked in the balls repeatedly by someone using boots made of iron. |
That's a pretty good response.......I would also add it was rushed and it shows, maybe Mike Portnoy was right.......They should have taken some time off.
I only like a couple songs on the new album......I skip a lot of them. |
Quite true, it sounds like it was somewhat rushed and I also only like one, maybe two song off of it.

Radation on the other hand contains about 15 minutes of worthwhile music and the remainder is just filler. Massive disappointments for me are: Camera Camera (Renaissance) - Never quite got into Azure D'or but nothing prepared me for Renaissance's attempt at going pop. Animals - Loved Water's lyrics in DSOTM and WYWH but from Animals onwards he gets more and more negative and cynical about the music industry and politicians. However loved the song Dogs which is one of Floyd's best numbers. Relayer - Coming on the heels of TOTO which is my favourite all time progressive rock album, the first section of Gates Of Delirium I found to be a rambling mess. It gets a lot better towards the end of the first side (the Soon section) and side 2 contains two great songs in Sound Chaser and To Be Over. The Sum Of No Evil (Flower Kings) - Just never been able to get into this album

I immensely dislike Dream Theater's newest, a Dramatic Turn of Events. |
After a little bit of skepticism during the first few listens, ADToE became one of my favorite albums. It stands out to me because I think it's better composed than their others; DT has a tendency to get all heavy-riff-happy on the parts with vocals and solo-happy during the instrumental parts, and I felt that this album had more interesting parts underneath the vocals and that the instrumental sections had more of a compositional, structured feel instead of just functioning as cadenza sections.

You need to listen to that again, bro. Every song of every album is composed by the guitarist and he plays in EVERY song.
