I like almost everything, but English Horns always seemed a little too nasal and grating. How do you not like French Horns? You'd be hard pressed to find a more beautiful, smooth tone.

I really like the xylophones on Curved Air's "Over and Above" and Strawberry Alarm Clock's "The World's On Fire" - they wouldn't be the same without them.

I don't really hate violins. But they often steal more of the spotlight than they deserve. And their "emotional" tone just gets kind of tiresome to me. They do sound pretty in small doses. And I was also thinking of when violins are used as "fiddles", which is an abomination.

Violin players strike me as very self-absorbed. I prefer the more sociable traits of, say, a cellist.
I see where you are coming from. Yeh the violinists are the 'look at me' guys. Tones of a cello or viola are more pleasing anyway. Like flugelhorn is the poor cousin of the trumpet but sounds much nicer.

Sure, Mark O'Connor can definitely wail on that thing, and I respect him for that. Can't say I really enjoyed that clip though, apart from admiring his skill.
