Progressive Biography

date of birth : 24-FEB-1980

Story with prog : at first listen, back when I was maybe 14 years old, I couldn't understand prog music. Then I discovered groups such as MARILLION or IQ (that sounded fresher than the first prog artists my ears were exposed to) and it exerted such a magnetism on me that I craved for more of such stuff. I learned that both bands belong to the "prog" genre (a term I wasn't aware of at that time) and after some research on the internet, I soon discovered that neo-prog was only one of the many subgenres prog includes. With the revival of the progressive movement in the early nineties, I heard about DREAM THEATER and wanted to know more about what was further called metal-prog. Then, going back to the roots and the influences of these new bands, I dug in the older prog-stuff : GENESIS, YES, CARAVAN and I was very pleased with the music they played. I am still listening to the prog-genre with enthusiasm, but far from restricting my musical tastes to prog, I am also keen on jazz (S. VAUGHAN, B. HOLLIDAY, BUDDY RICH BIG BAND, PAT METHENY, JAN GARBAREK...), ska (The Skatalites, Mimi MAURA), artists composing soundtracks for movies (WOJCIECH KILAR, JOHN WILLIAMS...) and also pop/rock artists (THE BEATLES, DAVID BOWIE, KEVIN GILBERT, KATE BUSH, THE STRANGLERS...), soul (ARETHA FRANKLIN, OTIS REDDING, CURTIS MAYFIELD, RANDY CRAWFORD) . Finally, thanks to the rich diversity of musical fields within prog , I learned to respect other musical genres that I wouldn't appreciate otherwise.

Collection of original prog CDs : I tend to buy the whole discography of a band when I like it. All JETHRO TULL records from 1972 to 1979, all SAGA records from 1978 to 1985 etc.

Favourite bands, artists : SAGA, JAN GARBAREK, JETHRO TULL, JORDAN RUDESS, SAGRADO CORACAO DA TERRA), JONI MITCHELL, MARILLION, PLANET X, DREAM THEATER.

Favourite albums : 'A trick of the tail' (GENESIS), ' Warchild' (JETHRO TULL), 'Dust and dreams' (CAMEL), 'Synchronicité' (PATRICK FORGAS), 'Peacock party' (GORDON GILTRAP), 'Vespertine' (BJORK), 'Misplaced childhood' (MARILLION), '.
