I just recently started posting on these forums and in my introductory thread, I was told that my tastes are different from the norm for this site.  What would you guys recommend for a newb to get them, for lack of better terms, "on the right path"?

I like:
Between The Buried And Me, Converge, Pig Destroyer, Neurosis, Earth, Opeth, Sunn O))), Isis, Melvins, Meshuggah, Nile, The Faceless, Deathspell Omega, Enslaved, Katatonia, Down, Swallow The Sun, The Casualties, Gojira, Agalloch, Baroness, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Misery Index, A Live Once Lost, Cattle Decapitation, Anaal Nathrakh, Sonic Youth, Entombed, The Chariot, Cryptopsy, Murder Construct, and Ash Borer.

I know not all of these are prog, but just gives an idea of what I'm currently into.  Any suggestions are appreciated and thanks for your time.

You might want to change this thread title to avoid confusion.

^^ I think I know what your trying to get at. You like prog, but you want go expand your sound with in the prog genre itself. It sounds to me, judging from your thread post, that you like a lot of tech/extreme metal. I do t think I could really help you expand on that particular genre seeing as how I'm not really into that sound very much, but I can list a view genres that have a different sound altogether to maybe help with your diversifying.

First off. There is ART ROCK/FOLK PROG. I think DEAD CAN DANCE are the very best in this category.
Albums to look at would be THE SEPENTS EGG, IN THE REAL OF A DYING SUN and the great ANASTASIS.

Secondly. GOTHIC PROGRESSIVE METAL. your getting into more familiar territory here, but still very different from your bands listed. I can recommend greatly, SAVIOUR MACHINE. Terrific band. Explore all their works.

Lastly, I think Ecelectic prog and Neo prog may be a nice bit of fresh air for you in contrast to your current consistant sound. I reccomend KING CRIMSON. a band that really difined prog in general. Has some jazz elements as well. albums are IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING and RED. Seriously fantastic. The Neo Prog. IQ and ARENA are the reigning champs in my opinion. MARILLION has the most comercial sound in this genre, but explore IQ's the SEVENTH HOUSE, EVER and FREQUENCY. ARENA. IMMORTAL? And PRIDE.

OK   So I don't want to overload ya, but check those bands listed. You won't be sorry. Hope I could help.
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

Thanks progbethyname,  I know King Crimson's In The Court Of The Crimson King, but not really the rest of their catalogue.  I'm listening to Dead Can Dance right now.

There's nothing wrong with the path you're on right now, but maybe try Arcturus Behold the Arctopus, Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye and Maudlin of the Well (I like Bath).  I'd like to suggest Boredoms Vision Creation New Sun, and some Guapo (maybe try Elixirs, Black Oni, and 5 Suns)
Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Well, seeing as how you like some really heavy stuff, you might like more of the Progressive Metal sub-genre. You should check out some of the bands in my signature, specifically (based on Katatonia) Riverside and (I dunno, just think you might like them) Animals as Leaders.

Haha, I already recommended Riverside to you - thought your username sounded familiar!

In any case, if you're interested in the Prog Metal sub-genre, I'm your man. I dabble in everything else, but my real expertise lies there.

Nice to see someone who is interested in extreme metal. I´m a bit old school in my tastes in that deparfment so I´ll imidiately recommend that you take a listen to some of the seminal artists in the technical/progressive extreme metal genre:

Atheist (Unquestionable Presence and Elements)
Cynic (everything)
Death (start with Symbolic)
Pestilence (the Spheres album)
Sadist (the Tribe album)

I got Origo by Burst a couple of years ago.  Pretty interesting.  Sounds like Neurosis with the fat cut off.  I'll look into Breach.

I´d get the "Venom" album by Breach. Pretty dark post hardcore.

...oh and Moloken too. They are kind of a mix between Neurosis and Breach. Their "Rural" album is pretty great.

Your taste in music is very similar to mine. The new Murder Construct album was awesome.

You'd probably like Ulcerate.

I recommend to you Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.  Heavy (and weird!) avant-prog.
