I disagree, but I can understand what you're saying: Live is in some ways definitely an improvement. As Mike Rutherford once said, Genesis is in essence a live band. It's alive, organic. Still, I think the studio version has its strong points as well, plus it has Salmacis and some strong short songs, which haven't been played live, or they are at least not being recorded live in the early years (or anytime?)

Yeah, but the question is about which version of the song you like better, not which album.

The one where I first heard it from . I like the one I heard first because of the atmosphere it created!

Right, I read it wrong. Still: the Nursery Cryme version, for all the subtleties.

The album as a whole?
My only criticism of the live album is that it's not long enough.. They could have squeezed in Fountain of Salmarcis and maybe Stagnation, or pushed it to a double album with Horizons/ Suppers Ready, Can Utility, Seven Stones or Looking for Someone..

^It was going to be a double with Supper's on it, but the record company didn't think there would be enough sales/interest in a double live from Genesis at that point.

So I understand. Although as a mini album it did sell quite well IIRC, certainly in the UK it made the top 10.
Foxtrot had managed around number 12 in the album charts, but they were also selling quite well in Italy and Belgium. I reckon a double live would have sold ok, if the record Co had had the balls to put it out.

Wow, listening back to back, I might actually like the live remastered version better. The sound quality of the studio isn't that great to begin with, plus I've listened the crap out of it.

This.
I love the energy of the live version and prefer the production on that album. |
I agree entirely. The only thing I miss on the live version is the harmony guitar at the end.

They had evolved a bit as musicians by the time the live album was recorded, so I felt the performance was a little better. Not that there is anything specifically wrong with the studio performance. The live version just sounds more confident to me.

Nursery Cryme version, although there are 2 other live versions on the song that i think are the best (both are from '72 and '73, respectively. look them up!)

Never warmed to that live album , actually was never that keen on any of the officlal Genesis live albums tbh although I do like the live material on the two box sets that were put out. A bit weird I suppose. I can understand the view that it should have been longer perhaps. Maybe it would have flowed better. However I'm not sure I would still like it all that much. They ruined The Knife altogether which is so powerfull on Trespass
what I want (really really want ) is that Lyceum gig (1980) that was broadcast on Tommy Vance's rock show to be properly remastered. (and a DVD to go with it please). Also includes a much better version of The Knife

I also got a the live album "Live at the Rainbow", which came with the live box-set from them, and it's kind of a nice way to complete what is missing in "Genesis Live"... I actually like better the Rainbow one, because it has more songs that I like. However, between both albums I got many live versions which I like so much better than the original studio songs.

Is that Lyceum show the sae one that's on the Duke re-issue DVD?
If so that is pretty good, apart from the sound quality. Doesn't sound very 'big' if you know what I mean. Good set list though. I thought the original FM broadcast of the 1978 Knebworth show was very good. I really liked the version of Fountain of Sal Marcis.
As for other live albums, I'm not overly keen on Three Sides live, but Seconds Out has some sublie moments. Cinema Show and Firth of Fifth are mindblowing, especially the instrumental sections.

yep I love the Chester + Phil moments but generally there was never enough of them. One For The Vine is much better (imo) on Three Sides Live than on the album simply because of that superb instrumental mid section.
